Alto Ligonha Pegmatites

Alto Ligonha (Alto Legonha)


The Alto Ligonha Pegmatite Field or Alto Ligonha Pegmatite Province, with its large numbers of gem-bearing pegmatites, covers a fairly large area within about a 200-km radius of the town of Alto Ligonha. A large number of pegmatites are concentrated around the Alto Ligonha town. There is essentially no important mineral locality within the immediate area of Alto Ligonha town. The region is noted for many world-class gem-bearing and rare mineral bearing granite pegmatites. There are a few metallic ore deposits as well as several important emerald mines.

Historically some authors have refered to this area as "Alto Ligonha district" using both a narrower ("around Alto Ligonha") and a more broad sense ("Alto Ligonha pegmatite province"). "Alto Ligonha" is also historically refering to an administrative district.

"Alto Ligonha" has been a "Posto Administrativo" in the Gilé District. Gilé it self is also a "Posto Administrativo".
