System:OrthorhombicColour:Iron-black
Hardness:6 - 6½
Member of:Columbite Group
Name:From ferrous iron content and the Greek mythological Tantalus, for the difficulty of dissolving the mineral. The original material with Fe>Mn was called Tantalite, subsequent name changes recognized the compositional variability of the series.
Dimorph of:Tapiolite-(Fe)

Tantalite-(Fe)-Tantalite-(Mn) Series. Tantalite-(Fe) is fairly rare and many specimens are actually misidentified Tapiolite-(Fe).

Formerly known as ferrotantalite.

Classification of Tantalite-(Fe)

IMA status:Valid - first described prior to 1959 (pre-IMA) - "Grandfathered" 2008
Explanation of status:Name changed from ferrotantalite to tantalite-(Fe).
