A variety of Fluorapatite

A manganese-bearing variety of Fluorapatite. The name "Manganapatite" has been previously applied to this variety.

This is a blue Mn-bearing variety of Fluorapatite. It can be of two types. When Mn2+ replaces Ca, the result is a bright blue "manganapatite" typical for later stages of mineral formation in the phosphate type of rare metal granitic pegmatites. For example, it often forms blue rims around orange lithiophilite grains at the Rb-Ta Elash deposit. When Mn3+ replaces P we have pinkish or violet "manganapatite" typical for some alkaline pegmatites of the Lovozero massif. [Definition provided courtesy of Pavel Kartashov]

NOTE: The name "Manganoan Apatite" has been used to describe certain samples of Fluorapatite that contain a trace amount of Mn that causes a golden-yellow fluorescent response under UV. Without the manganese fluorapatite is unresponsive to UV. The latter mineral should strictly be classed as just "Fluorapatite" as the amounts of Mn present are usually small.
