PORTUGAL AND RELATED MINERALS

There are fifteen species and varieties of minerals that, one way or another, are related with Portugal and or with Portuguese people; some were approved by IMA and have been found in the Portuguese territory.


1. Azorite (or Açorite) - is described as a variety of zircon in volcanic rocks of the Azores Islands; named for Azores Islands http://www.mindat.org/min-443.html

2. Claudetite - an oxide of arsenic from São Domingos Mine http://www.mindat.org/min-1060.html named after F. Claudet, French chemist, who first described the natural material

4. Berndtite - a sulphide of tin from Panasqueira Mines http://www.mindat.org/min-637.html for Dr. Fritz Berndt, German Mineralogist

5. Fayalite - a ferrous olivine very rare in nature http://www.mindat.org/min-1458.html named by Gmelin in 1840 for the type locality, Faial Island (Fayal Island)

8. Panasqueiraite - a complex phosphate from Panasqueira Mines http://www.mindat.org/min-3073.html

9. Rittmannite - an aluminium phosphate, manganese, calcium and iron http://www.mindat.org/min-3425.html named after Alfred Rittman, Professor of Petrology

10. Sabugalite - a uranium and aluminium phosphate http://www.mindat.org/min-3496.html named after its discovery locality, Sabugal

11. Thadeuite - a complex phosphate from Panasqueira Mines http://www.mindat.org/min-3929.html is a tribute to a Portuguese scientist, Decio Thadeu (1919-1995), Professor of Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, with significant scientific research work in the field of mineral deposits

12. Zodacite - a hydrated calcium phosphate http://www.mindat.org/min-4429.html named after Peter Zodac (1894-1967) founder and long-time editor of "Rocks and Minerals"

In addition to these national-type minerals is important to note two more species, from foreign localities, whose names are related with two national mineralJosé Marques Correia Nevesogists


13. Andradite - Garnet Group http://www.mindat.org/min-223.html for José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva (1763-1838), Portuguese-Brazilian mineralogist, Professor at the University of Coimbra and eld other relevant positions namely at the Academia das Ciências in Lisbon

14. Leiteite - a zinc arsenate, Tsumeb, Namibia http://www.mindat.org/min-2370.html named for Luis Antonio Bravo Teixeira-Leite (1942–1999), Portuguese-South African amateur mineralogist of Pretoria, South Africa, who noted the first specimen
