Baryte surprise at mineral auction
Last Updated: 13th Feb 2013
I purchased a very neatly arranged and well labelled collection of Cloncurry - Mount Isa region specimens at the Kempsey Rock and Mineral Auction last Saturday. I had bid on the lot because it contained a pseudomalachite specimen that would fill a gap in my collection. While examining the other specimens in the set, I came upon a really interesting specimen of baryte from a mine I had not heard of called the Silver Phantom Mine. There was no data about this mine on Mindat, but I was able to find mention on a US mining data source. The mine was near a location called Malbon, 69km from Cloncurry. It produced 32 848oz of silver from 27t of ore and closed in 1954. In the baryte, labelled as containing minor chalcopyrite, I also noticed some golden-brown grains, some of which had become a brilliant metallic blue colour, the one I tested scratched easily with a dressmakers pin and produced some flakes which appeared to be cleavage fragments in one plane. I could not tell whether the flakes were at all flexible owing to their miniscule size. I cannot find any reference about the silver-containing minerals in this mine, but perhaps sternbergite was significant??

Thanks Pavel, perhaps if I crack the baryte again I may find another grain or two to test for flexible flakes, but I am reluctant to do it. Did you look at my photograph (I really need a better resolution microscope, and a decent lamp!)
Kind regards,

Hello Alan,,The Silver Phantom Mine is near the deserted mining town of Kuridala ,about 80k south of Cloncurry in NW Qld..The mine operated from about 1954 to at least 1978..It it still a mining lease but not currently operating..Most of the silver minerals were found in massive white baryte..The minerals found are Baryte, Quartz,Chalcedony,Native Silver,Cerargyrite(most likely Chlorargyrite as its waxy green masses and crystals),,Argentite,,,,,,also reported but not seen by me ,,proustite or pyrargyrite, rutile .

Wow! Thank you Costas, brilliant! What do you think the mineral grain(s) I have seen might be? Have you looked at the photo I have posted? I will of course retract the mineral name if it is incorrect.
Thanks, Alan

Alan,, I saw the image and it attracted my full attention ,,there are copper shows and mines within 2k of the Silver Phantom..One fairly huge opencut about 2k away is the Young Australia Copper Mine,,Unless you can get enough of the mineral to test I'm affraid my guess is it may be Covellite but I hope its Sternbergite..

Alan and Cos, good work! It may be sternbergite and covelllite, it would be great to get it tested. The location needs adding to Mindat, do you have any references Cos? I suspect there are a lot of mines in the area needing adding?

Sternbergite ID se very easy because of the flexibility of sternbergite crystals. I dont know about any other mineral of similar colour with this property.
Kind regards
