Future Ideas and Work

Last Updated: 7th Dec 2007

Here's a list (which I will expand as time goes on) of things that I can and will add to mindat.org. I will add a priority order to them by putting a number in brackets after, with (1) being most important and (10) being very unimportant.

This will change over time and I welcome your comments and suggestions below!

Mindat Front Page

* Could do with a redesign
* Formatting of table columns is not ideal in Internet Explorer
* Display new blog/article entries?
* List of latest messages on home pages

Messageboard

* Upgrade to latest version of software
* Integrate mindat markup
* better anti-spam

Mindat Directory

* Reminder emails to dealers if their advert is about to expire
* Password reminder system
* MUCH better Events system needed

Mineral Pages

* Bug with breaking chemical formula into essential elements
* Finish system for adding crystal diagrams
* Link that into photo library if possible

Locality Pages

* Current 'nearest' locality code for US should be expanded to worldwide

Locentry Pages

* Improve significantly! We can do a lot more with these.

Photo Pages

* Thumbnail-style photo list option (like the old photo page with 50 on a page that we used to have
* Better photo search for general site photo searching (see how it works on user pages now)
* Allow upload of PNG format images (use imagecreatefrompng() if suitable)
* Implement new photo delete system.
* Restore counter

Auctions

* Complete
* Set up test users

Articles and Blogs

* When editing/creating article, on save go to article/blog rather than home page
* Add in article history and revisions
* Set up system to allow authors of articles to assign coauthors with editing rights.

Miscellaneous

* Debug and test KML export for Google Earth
* Finish Mindat for ipod
* Open up minvision to other dealers, better integration with Mindat and auctions.
* Allow people to record audio samples of how mineral and locality names are pronounced
* RSS autodiscovery and RSS on front page

Bugs

* forum include bug (see messageboard)

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare phorum_custom_get_url() (previously declared in /var/www/mindat/phorum_settings.php:27) in /var/www/mindat/phorum_settings.php on line 27

FLV files are Flash Video files designed to be embedded in webpages (with an appropriate Flash player). It's the same technology that YouTube uses, albeit they use a lower bitrate than I do so the quality is not as good. You can convert the FLV back to something like MPEG by using the ffmpeg toolkit.

Wondering why the mineral photo search works differently for personal galleries than they do in the general gallery. When viewing photos from a given locality from the list on the personal page (Which Locality), none of the photos from their sub-localities are included as they usually are in when accessing the general gallery from the site pages. (i.e., viewing photos from Chester Co., from my personal page, only photos tagged with just "Chester Co." are presented, items from more detail/sublocalities within Chester Co. are not included).

My personal interest here is that if the "which locality" option could work the same as photo view does in the general gallery, then I could add a viable link to my focused contributions for Pennsylvania on my homepage, and could at long last, post materials from my systematic and other locality collections without hoplessly mixing them all together. Any idea if this could be possible?

Maybe adding view counter to pictures could be usefull. Im just curious how many views some pics have, it could also help you to judge your pics. And if theres alot of views it could encourage some ppl to upload some more because they see its interesting for others.

I have an idea concerning the Event section. As soon as I write it down and see if it might work, I'll post it.
