Namibian trip 2012.

5th Mar 2012

Hi there

I'm super excited about my holiday/collecting trip coming up, in 16 days to be exact.
Im going from March 21 to April 8th.
Im renting A 4X4 tn Windhoek.

I will be visiting Sosusvlei area and the old Garob/Gorob mine known for staurolite.
I will also go to Erongo area, though all the collecting areas are on private land,
I will buy from the locals there.
Then I will go to Klein Spitzkoppe area one of my favorite collecting areas for topaz,
microline, beryl ans smokey quartz.
this year I will go to Messum crater to explore and search for the collecting areas there, I have
seen some nice crystals from there.
I will definitely visit the Goboboseb locality known for some of the finest quartz's in the world,
this is one of my all time favorite localities as there is just nothing but vast plains and mountains surrounding you.
I will be going to Windhoek, Swokopmund, Walvisbaai and Uis and some smaller towns if anybody knows of some nice and interesting mineral shops there please let me know. Especially in Windhoek I don't know where to find any there.

Anybody wishing to share any info with me right here is where you can do.
I will update this blog when im back with finds and stories etc.

Thanks Herman

Hi Herman, In Swakopmund there are 3 shops, Desert Gems (the best), Stonetique and Henkert's. On the way to Swakopmund there is a very large shop in Karibib (so, so). In Windhoek there is Rocks and Gems and the old Sid Pieters shop (Pietersite). Most street vendors are at the turn-off from the Windhoek to Swakopmund tar road to Uis - Spitzkoppe. Don't forget the Museum in Swakopmund and the Crystal Gallery. Officially, if you want to take rocks out of the country you need invoices. Make a plan with one of the shops/dealers, and a permit from the Mines Department at the Eros Airport in Windhoek (2 Days) Rolf

Herman, the Messum Crater, note most of this area is protected as a national park, it is ecologically very sensitive, if you visit make sure you keep to existing tracks.
