Mule Varde micromount symposium 2008

Last weekend I arranged the second Mule Varde micromount symposium, with help from my local geological society, and just like last year it became a success. It was even better, because more collectors came this year. We opened the doors 10 a.m. Saturday, and a half hour later the house was loaded with stereoscopes, minerals and of course people. Total 19 collectors visited Mule Varde during the symposium. Sounds little? That’s perhaps half of the serious micro- and systematic-collectors in Norway…

The symposium had one speech, held by me, about localities and minerals in the Eifel area, Germany. Thanks to José Dehove, Fred Kruijen and Stephan Wolfsried for letting me use their great photos! The subject was choosen because of my trip there last summer together with André Robbemond, a good friend and dedicated systematic collector.

The speech was a well put break in the busy crowd running between each others boxes, looking at mineral brought to brag, and of course to swap. Both old materials that have been hidden for years in drawers and cellars, and more resent collected material… And also important, all the unidentified minerals that tend to pile up were shown around, and with the help of the “elite” of Norwegian mineral knowledge, a lot where identified. I can now put labels on a cople of more minerals.

Well, time to show some of the people…

After closing the doors around 16.00, most of us met again for a nice dinner at a restaurant in Skien, the small Norwegian town where I live and once Henrik Ibsen was born.

Sunday was a lot quieter than Saturday, with less people able to come, but for those of us still there, it only gave us better time to look at more minerals and swap some more samples. All in all, a very nice time for all of us!
