less than one week until Eastfjords of Iceland

21st Jun 2009

Thats right, less than one week until I leave for the east. I'll be hitting Berufjörður, Brieðdalur, and the Lón area which I have never visited before. Lón is known for, Epidote, Prehinite, Galena, Rosasite, Zinkblend, and some nice Chalcopyrite. Smokey Quartz, Amythest, and even Citrine have been found in this wide vally. Plus not only being nice for rockhounding, it is one of the most beautiful spots in Iceland, other than the main highway, and a small number of farms, it is pristeen and untouched land.

I'm still tossing the Idea on going through Fáskruðsfjörður, or just using Breiðdalur. Fáskruðsfjörður is the place that turned me on to mineral collecting, plus I'd be able to hit Reyðarfjörður on the way. Also we are planning to visit Raufarhöfn in the far north east. And of course a little rock hounding there.

And then on our way home, hit a few spots around the Akureyri area, and the new road cut on the Skagi penensula. And if we have time, Grab some natrolite, and Stellerite in the roadcuts in Haugar and a little whale slaughtering in Hvalfjörður.
