Hong Kong Phooey

Photo of HK Island from Kowloon
I've been in Hong Kong for a few days break, flying back to the UK tomorrow. Hong Kong is a very exciting place to visit, but there is very little to see mineralogically.

I gave a talk on mindat to the Hong Kong Mineralogy Society, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them, and I visited the Hong Kong Museum of History, which has a small mineral collection connected to its exhibit on the geological history of the islands.

But don't get too excited, there are about 20 specimens in total, and most of them are what we would call 'reference' pieces of Feldspar, etc. And, annoyingly, none of them have localities listed. I took photos of them all, I'll post some when I get back.

I also bought myself a new iPod Touch. And as is typical for me, it lasted about two hours before I could not resist the temptation to download utilities from the internet to 'jailbreak' it (this means I can install non-Apple approved applications, but in doing so it potentially voids the warranty). The amusing this is that I can now run a web server and PHP on my iPod, so there are some interesting possibilities for a portable version of mindat that I can take everywhere. I'll start experimenting when I'm back from Munich, I think!

ps. The iPod Touch is a fantastic toy! If you want a demo of what it can do once it is 'Jailbroken' then stop me in Munich and ask me to show you.
