The Farmersburg Coal Strip mine
29th Oct 2007
Well this weekend the trip down to my brothers house came as a bit of a surprise to me. I had plans to head down to my brothers house in two weeks. But do to his wife mother dieing my trip was moved up a few weeks. One of the many thing I like to do when I am down here is to check out the strip pit and how its been moving along. When it started operation about 6 years ago it was 5 miles to the east of where its at currently. If you have never seen a strip operation in action its a pretty amazing thing to see. When I stopped on the east side of the pit I was searching for Siderite nodules I found about 25 of them not as many as I would have liked but it was a start. During my searching around I heard in the distance a siren then I hear it again and then a third time. It was the blast warning it scared the hell out of me because when it started it was less the probably a quarter of a mile from me. That was a bit of a surprise to me because in less then 30 seconds the dust cloud was on me lol.
Well this morning I took the 8 minute drive and went back my plan was to take some pictures of it in operation last night, but I left my camera at my brothers place. When I arrived there i set up about 100 yards from the crane and started to shoot pictures. I heard the clack clack of the D11R heading in my direction. he was working on draining the various puddles/lakes that formed in last weeks rains down here. After shooting about 10 more pictures the driver or the D11 must have noticed me because he headed closer to me and stopped he checked me out but lost interest when he saw my camera. He went back to doing his dirt pushing job. Well what finally drove me away was the fact it was 30f outside and I was a bit cold. I hope to head a couple places on my way home and fill those buckets. My plans for them are to have a club meeting where we crack them open. But its all depending on if I find enough otherwise ill be cracking them myself.
Ps... I would add pictures but I havent figured out how to do it.
