Today’s trip went to a rather unexplored pegmatite locality near
Brokelandsheia. Weather was great, and I had great company too, having Knut Edvard Larsen with me. We had big expectations, from what we had been told by a third collector, but after an hour of searching the dumps we started to think about other collecting possibilities… All we found was the black tourmaline, schörl, which was pretty common. Lots of big crystal parts more than 10 cm long, but the only one that I brought with me was a 4 cm long terminated xl in matrix. Also found some green apatite.

Just nearby there was a new blown rock face, where some Polish carpenters where putting up a garage, we saw some pegmatite as well, and went over to have a look.
There we found a rather large lump of what probably is allanite-(Ce). More allanite occurred in a pegmatite in a small road cut a couple of hundred meters from there as well. On this allanite there is some read crystals, probably zircon.
After Brokelandsheia, we went to Kragerø, and one more pegmatite, Sjåen Quarry.
Had to walk for a while to find it, and we where pretty surprised about its position, at the top of a pretty steep cliff side. All the dumps had been sent out the cliff, so they where out of reach for us… But we had a look at the part of the quarry that was not filled with water, and in the wall there were still lots of clevelandite left. Several places there were also visible allanite crystals, but not really exciting…

Not a lot of mineral in the rucksack today, but with the good weather, and good company, it’s just been a perfect day out in the field!
