Every September, rockhounds, geologists, paleontologists, artists, and people who just like rocks converge on the Denver Merchandise Mart for the Denver Gem and Mineral Show, the second-largest show in the United States. The 42nd annual show will be held September 17-19, 2010. The Denver Gem & Mineral Show and concurrent Colorado Fossil Expo offer a spectacular view of the earth sciences and lapidary arts through exhibits and dealer displays from all over the world. 300 vendors and exhibits display and sell minerals, fossils, meteorites, gems, beads, jewelry and gift items, books, lapidary equipment, and more Displays showcase some of the world’s finest museum collections, and experts will speak on topics of geological and paleontological interest. Crafters and scientists demonstrate gem cutting, jewelry making, and fossil preparation. There will be free gold panning for children and free gem and mineral identification throughout the weekend. The theme for 2010 is “Minerals of Creede/Mineral County.”

The Denver Gem and Mineral Show is sponsored by the Greater Denver Area Gem & Mineral Council, a non-profit association of nine area clubs with 1400 members and run entirely by volunteers. All show proceeds benefit museums, scientific research, scholarships and education. For those interested, the show is a good opportunity to get in touch with one of the local clubs that continue to foster interest in the earth sciences all year round.
