1) In this part of the text "All of the specimens pictured here were labeled albite, but I doubt if they had all been tested for potassium as the dominant metallic atom in their structure and if you want to point out to me in a condescending manner that one of them is really oligoclase I will grill you about how you know for sure and, if you have a good reason, I will make the correction." I suppose POTASSIUM is to be replaced by SODIUM?

2) I'll try to write some additions for the article. Albite is not my primary intrest, but I have a (rather complete) "subcollection" of feldspars.

3) And talking of albite and oligoclase, is this entry about albite sensu stricto (Na between 100 and 90%) or about albite sensu largo (the half of the plagioclase series between 100 and 50% Na)? May be, there can come an entry about the plagioclases in general, where the occasional good finds of lesser known plagioclases are treated, like peristerite or the gemmy bytownite from Mexico? And beside that, this entry about albite ss and one about the other famous plagioclase labradorite?

Yes - I was starting to think ilmenite ... Does it occur in this type of matrix?

Here is another photo. I may have gone too far in trying to capture the metallic luster (some highlights are blown) but maybe it makes the point. The "in person" luster actually has a bit more of a bluesh tinge - maybe my color balance isn't set quite right. I added a teeny bit of blue using Photoshop but I didn't want to go overboard.

Anyway - I'm happy that this isn't proving totally obvious. Makes me feel less of a dunce!

Attached is a photo of a fluorite from the "Bikow Mine, Siberia." The largest crystal is 2.5 cm on edge, and the matrix appears to be largely fine grained fluorite of an earlier generation. I acquired the specimen from an American dealer at Munich in 2002. He had purchased it from a dealer from Budapest at the same show. Afterward, I made inquiries with several Russian collectors and mineralogists that I know and no one had ever heard of this locality, thus I concluded that it was likely irradiated Chinese material. It is attractive, however.

Hi All,

Thanks for the additional suggestions.

I think the luster on my photo is misleading. It is actually "metallic" - much like some galena (but NOT silver bright). So I don't think it's almandine. And the stuff is really, really dark gray/black where broken. I know melanite can be really dark as well but it just doesn't look like a garnet to me. And supposedly almandine streak is white ...

The euxenite-(Y) is an intriguing possibility. I've always been attracted to unusual minerals. But you'd think I would remember something like that. Plus, judging by the photos on Mindat, this would be quite a specimen for that mineral.

I don't have much experience with rutile (other than micros) so I can't tell if the "in person" appearance is reasonable. Maybe I'll try another photo to see if I can get the luster to be more realistic.

Right now I'm still leaning towards hematite (despite the hardness test failure). A couple of Mindat photos from Dypingdal, Norway show a matrix (hydrotalcite, lizardite) which looks similar (but I don't think I have lizardite).

Thanks to all - at least I have some leads to follow up on.

They tend to care less about where something is from, or whether it is a bit cloudy.

It seems like a rather large chunk (I wish I could have seen the whole crystal before it went down the river) and nice clarity (Not for faceted gems though.)
I would think at the least about 40 GBP to about 70 GBP.

These next few pics were taken between the arsenic calciners and the cliff. The first pic is of an unfortunate looking sign warning of subsidence could not be more true, the ground was very loose and there had been a few little slips here and there needless to say I did not stay there for long as the next time you stop falling was at the bottom of the cliff, but I saw a few artifacts lying amongst a pile of slag so I decided to (quickly) take some pics, anyone guess what they are?

Rock, I only know the basics about the geothermal wells they have up here. I think it took seven years to build the big one up north. It was slowed down due to the eruption of Krafla over a number of years. The newest one, the one that caused the geothermal changes at the fumaroles, was built in under two years. I think. Then we have the main power and water source for this part of Iceland which happens to be at "The Blue Lagoon". And this thing was built right across the street from the last fissure to erupt on this side of the country. Whitch erupted around 1226.

I know they drill straight down, around 1700m for the good steam. Then in the same hole they pull up cold water at a shallower level. The steam moves straight to the turbines. The cold water is filtered and then split in two streams, on stream moves right out as your cold water, the other is heated from the steam that passed through the turbines. Its to my knowledge that in some case they push the water back into the ground, but at the new plant they let it flow out to sea. Unfortunatly, for those tree huggers, that killed a large area of shore line, with water almost at boiling.

The steam is rather clean, to my knowledge. It is full of silicates, you can see this coating alot of old steam pipes. And in the capital of Reykjavik their water has a strong sulphur smell. In 1977 Iceland was the first country to successfuly create a volcanic eruption, when while drilling, they hit a magma pocket, and a few thousand pounds was released. They have better bits today.
