Hello all,

I was wondering if there is a quicker way to access my 'control center' and 'private messages'.
Right now, access to these are (only?) located in the Messageboard.
I would like to know if there is a way to access these through 'My Home Page'?
It would seem more logical to me anyway.

Another thing I'd like to know:
I've been using 'My Photos' for quite some time now.
I've been thinking about starting with 'My Catalogue'. Just so I have a backup of my data in case something happens to my computer. (I've had a external HD crash in the recent past).
I'd like to know whether it is possible to automatically add the specimens/images/information that are already in 'My Photos' to 'My Catalogue'.
And whether changes I make to either my photos or my catalogue (added or deleted specimens/images/information) can be automatically 'carried over' to either of them. If not, I'll have to build up 'my catalogue' from scratch...

Kind regards,

Hi to all, thanks for the answers already,

Two difficulties: find the specimens and have them photographed in time!

Yes Mario, many peoples make great pictures of minerals, of professional quality, but the pictures must be of your style and not of my style of picture or usual e-bay style to get into a magazine, hence my precision! The precision can also be justified because some photographers (BUT sometimes some way of printing, or the computer screen too!) do not give back the exact colors of specimens, and to my opinion, it is essential

According to the data I got, major specimens mostly went to the Gobin (father), a few to the sons, the formers entering in competition with two Belgians collectors working there at the time, one is not alive anymore, the other has a very buzzy international live and has the best collection of carrollites that could be imagined, making the vault speciment second choice Bob (of course I saw it)!, although I am not excluding the option. A couple of top specimens are in Luxemburg NHMuseum also, since the museum has a strong emphasis on Congolese mineralogy. Belgian museums have great specimens, but from former times, the best carrollites arrived later, when Belgian museums lost all ambition and started their decay (lack of budget and progressive splitting of the country).

I will make my choices in June, and will contact a few important dealers if I am not satisfied with my results!

Some more modest specimens are also of significant interest when displaying original habitus, like one I saw being so cubic it looks like bixbiite!

Yes Rock, there are not a lot of major specimens, If you have contacts with The American collector you mentioned, that could be intersting, all the options must be explored, whatever the results! Of course, I guess in the US, like in Belgium, some major collections are hidden, never shown, never published, out of access.

Cheers

Bob... Valere asked for the real good stuff;-)

I still wonder why magazines only looking for exclusieve photos who are only taken by professional or well known photographers, and looking only for specimens or pictures who are never have been published before. Magazines sometimes reject or refuse to publish photos because the pictures were already online like on a site like Mindat.
I mean if the photo is realy great and representative for specimen, it is not that important who took the picture. And so what for a article if a certain great picture was already published before in the MR or in Lapis. Because for certain species there is simply not that much choice to write an article with only the very best specimens when they not have may been published somewhere else before.
Anyway good luck with the article Valere!

Best regards,
One is pictured on page 1 of "the vault" on Rob Lavinsky's site and 1 is pictured on page 1 of the April 9 postings on Dan Weinrich's site. They may allow you to use their photos with no commercial attributes if you request so. In any case, good luck with the pix and the article! CHEERS.......BOB

Valere,
I think the best specimens were purchased by an american collector, but the chances of him providing photos of them is vanishingly small. It would probably take him a week to even find them. Other than those published in the MR and those belonging to the american collector I don't think there are ten or twelve really good ones in private or public hands. Check with the Goban brothers. They were the ones who got them all and may be able to tell you who may have the few good ones that escaped to other places.

Hi to all

For a publication to come in a top German magazine, looking for (from professionnal/or known photographers) high resolution pics of OUTSTANDING specimens of Congolese carrollites of top aestetics, with exact labelling, sizes...

If possible from private/museum/university collections with no commercial links on specimens, not published before in the MR, Lapis and other major magazines... To be able to select 10-12 pictures would be great! So the more possibilities I have, the better!
If you have a top one and accept it to be published (anonymously or with your collection/institution name), here is an opportunity!

The first draft should be submitted by the end of June. I have no specimen good enough for this kind of publication myself! If interested, please PM me!

Many Thanks

Hello, Can any of the managers please tell me where my iris quartz photo is? it was uploaded on the 12th of February and I have had no message to say it has not been approved but it is not visible in the public gallery, does this mean that it is only in my own private gallery? I added a close up photo of one of the crystals, showing a nice rainbow effect with stripes of colour, that was added to the public gallery very quickly, so i am happy to have at least one iris quartz photo in the gallery but would like the other photo to be seen as well, it shows the entire specimen and it wasn't easy to get a photo that showed the coloured flashes. I am sorry to pester about this, I blame Alfredo Petrov, since i read his article on iris quartz I am obsessed with the stuff and that is why i am so keen to see my iris quartz photo in the gallery!

E.L.
From the personal information you list on you home page you could very well soon become a level two person here on mindat or possibly a manager. I thought the pictures you post of stuff from various Illinois and Iowa quarries were quite interesting and your work on the 25 year index of the Mineralogical Record indicates that you must know your stuff. I have used that index a fair amount, especially in regard to creating stubs of A minerals for the Best Minerals project here on Mindat. Do you know if there is any movement to creating an online index for the Min Record for all years?

One of the things that the management here on mindat has increasingly come to value if people can get along with others and can with good humor over look and work with the minor idiosyncrasies of others. I as a manager have often felt that I am, or at least have been right on the border, of what the other managers can tolerate. If nothing else I hope I have learned to be a little more tolerant of others. I suspect that this is the kind of thing that comes naturally to politicians. The key to being accepted here as a level two person or a manager is that a person besides the above, is in inclination to do work here on mindat beyond uploading a few images and participating on the message board. Participating in the message board is important because it allows the managers to see how you interact with other's especially newbes who don't know much. You get points for being nice to them and trying your best to help them and not make them feel foolish. The other thing that managers worry about is that you know your way around the site and when you enter or correct localities and or images you do it correctly and don't make many errors, in other words you don't screw things up. If for instance you thought you could work on cleaning up localities in Illinois and or Iowa (they may or may not require a lot of work) this is something that would be appreciated. If you decided to to this kind of work you should first give us some idea of what needs to be done and then coordinate your work with Chet Lemanski who is our locality guru. Also you might like to do a few Best Minerals articles. This is the subsection of Mindat that is given over to my care and the other moderators of this part of the message board. You complete a couple of those and Ill make you a moderator and you can create your own articles there from scratch.

Is there any particular part of mindat that you think you would like to work on? How would you like to see mindat change? What shortcomings do you find here on mindat?
