I've found where the logic errors were that allowed this to happen. Anyone could repost the auction if the winning bid was just at the reserve. Fixed it now. At first, when I logged onto the auction site, there was a message saying I had been successful, but when I logged in again a
while later it had disappeared. I have had strange occurences on two auctions - but fortunately, you require the seller to be a registered Mindat member, and therefore I have been able to contact both sellers.
