Thanks Joshua, I had a very good time in your country. Nigeria is certainly not a country which you would consider as "Africa for beginners" but after having spent some 20 y in various African countries I had no major problems. The weather wasn't too bad, places like central Chad in May, Guinea during the rainy season or the mountains of eastern Madagascar are worse. Presently I am in Europe but will be back in SE Africa in some 4 weeks time, later this year I plan to work in West and East Africa.
If you can give me a bit more of information where your quartz crystals are coming from I could perhaps tell you more about your chances in finding other minerals.

Thanks Joshua, that helps a lot. In 2007 I worked in the Plateau State at the Kigom molybdenite deposit (Kigom). The Jos region hosts many mineral and gemstone occurrences, so your little quartz crystal could be indeed an indicator for more interesting minerals, mainly pegmatite and granite/greisen related ones. Good luck hunting!

Barka kadai Joshua,

Quartz is not a very distinctive indicator for other "gemstones" or minerals in general as quartz crystals may occur in a very wide range of geological settings. It would help if you let us know more about the local geology and the region where it was found. I assume you are residing in Nigeria, a country with plenty of interesting minerals although many of the Nigerian mineral occurrences have never been studied in much detail.
More info would help, please.
It is not like anything valuable, if that is your concern...
What State and County, or Province, whatever?
And, yes, the picture isn't really enough better. Joshua, I found it aggravating when I got into this hobby that I would also have to get a lot better at photography to do it justice online. But as said, quartz is super common, so one lone crystal (often abbreviated 'xl') gives no real info, except a cool find for someone to just pick up off the ground!

Canaanite

"Canaanite" was actually thought to be a new mineral (not just a variety) by Dr. Samuel Luther Dana (b. 11 July 1795, Amherst, New Hampshire; d. 11 March 1868, Lowell, Massachusetts), who named it for the locality of Canaan, Connecticut. S. L. Dana was a Harvard graduate (1813), chemist, and brother of J. Freeman Dana (of "danaite").

The Dana brothers were active in early mineralogical studies and had published "Mineralogy and Geology of Boston and its Environs" in 1819.

The following note about canaanite is from: Hobbs, Wm. H. (1892). "Notes on Some Pseudomorphs From the Taconic Region", American Geologist, vol. 10, p. 45.

"This was first thought by Hitchcock to be scapolite (Geol. Rep. Mass. 2d. ed., 1835, p. 315), afterwards nephrite or saussurite (Rep. Geol. Mass. 1841, p. 569). On the basis of a faulty analysis by SL Dana it was thought to be a new mineral and named Canaanite (Alger's Phillip's Mineralogy, 1844, p. 89). Shepard at first thought it nephrite or saussurite (Geol. Mass., 1841, p. 569), but afterwards recognized it as pyroxene (Rep. Geol. Survey Conn., 1837, p. 134). In Dana's System of Mineralogy (5th ed., 1868, p, 803) an analysis by Burton is printed showing the mineral to be pyroxene."
