Very suspicious locality. Somewhat resembles Parker mine material, but unclear whether the ugly silicate mineral is clinopyroxene or forsterite (Parker mine has forsterite). However, black spinels aren't exactly rare. Also, the sample appears to have been put in HCl to remove some of the calcite - forsterite is usually surficially altered to a greyish to whitish material in the process; Parker mine may not be a great match. Certainly not an impressive specimen for Ontario or wherever it's from.

Hi Tim:

The orange Grossularite garnets are so common at the York River skarn zone that almost every specimen has them. The sample you have lacks these garnets so it may not be from the skarn zone. I don't know the detailed mineralogy of the Highway 620 Grossularite location, in Chandos Township, but from what I remember of it the orange garnets were very common there as well.

I'm going to ask my fellow collector where and when he bought the piece. I, too, would have associated the larger crystals with the goethite. The more thin reddish crystals in the center of the image should be the Ianthiniite.

I was up in Carr canyon looking for that area. I came across a large dump of white Quartz, is this the area where the find was? There was also a cut that looked like the forest department erected a wall on to stop digging. Is that the case?
