I recently inherited a collection of crystalsand geodes and do not have the faintest idea what anything else. The crystal in question is a dark brown polished crystal that is somewhat see through. Get a mineral book with lots of pictures and start thumbing through it. If you know some common mineral names, try the mindat galleries. In fact, a good start with the most common minerals is to, on the homepage, click 'search minerals by properties', then click the box' IMA accepted only', that'll show pictures of all the most common stuff, and click each mineral for more info.
