I'm looking for recommendations for a usb microscope that has decent resolution for photos of micro crystals on larger matrix rocks (light microscope types are out). I have a cheap usb microscope that only has a focus adjust. I'm looking for something that can zoom and focus. I have quite a few micros including some tiny purple apatites, quartz crystals, wulfenites and others as well as tiny flakes of gold from panning. Looking for something that can take pictures of all of the above.

Thanks in advance.

I would guess that "simple" may not exactly fit the bill, however, having read numerous articles online about taking mineral photos, just want some basic help. Being semi-retired and on a tight budget, I wanted to re-catalog my collection using a photo of each speciman that does it justice. I have heard anywhere from 3 megapixels and up- but since most cameras today are in the 12 and higher range, just what brands, cost and those that fill focus in to one inch are there? Understand that lighting can be simple and home-made for the most part(Scovil need not worry about me being a competition!!!)
Would appreciate any help that can keep from selling the farm in order to photograph minerals.

Thanx

1) Any recommendations for a dslr that allows live view on computer (going through microscope photo port, not eyepiece tube)? I already have dslr with all types equipment, but it doesn't permit live view. Therefore, I am looking for one that isn't too expensive.

2) Also, what is required set-up to have live view on computer screen and be parfocal (stay in focus on screen) with what is seen in focus in eyepiece?

3) Finally, if each pixel is made of of red, green, blue sensors (RGB), then as megapixels increase as camera sensor chip remains the same, does the size of the RGB sensors decrease in size so that more pixels can be crammed onto chip?

Thanks.

This topic has probably come up before, but I have included the photo that I’m having trouble with (but actually I have other specimens that might benefit, as well as perhaps other photos that might be taken of this one).

This is not the only specimen I have for which photos are unable to convey its essence. The specimen is almost breathtaking in person. If it were a 14.7 cm cluster of quartz in hexagonal prisms, it wouldn’t be much. But as fluorite dodecahedrons–rare in themselves–up to nearly 5 cm across and water clear with few internal flaws, it is impressive. The photos I have taken so far (perhaps 40) fall flat.

Below are two attempts, among my best. I posted the first one already. The angles of the photos are slightly different. One has an artificial but true color background of light blue. The other has the natural background, but it needs processing to remove some glare from lighting. I like the blue because that color comes through the crystals. Black just wouldn’t be the same, and white is really plain.

How does one get a good photo of such crystal-clear specimens? I have tried all angles of illumination, even purposely adding reflections to highlight crystal faces. It is difficult with little or no contrast across the surfaces and no significant shading. Roughness from the undersides of the crystals where they attach to matrix comes through because there is nothing to block the light. They really are completely transparent, but internal refraction seems to focus light coming from the edges of crystals, and the visibility of opposite crystal faces and edges (showing through crystals!) make them rather whitish. Brownish areas are where matrix shows through. In your hand, all of that is clear, but not in the photo!

Any suggestions about how I can improve on this?

I was working with a Canon 40D and a Nikon D90 this evening. I removed the lenses and observed the live-view function.

The D90 drops the mirror, then raises it to take the shot and then returns it to the up position to resume live-view.

The 40D simply starts the image, then moves the shutter curtain to end the exposure and returns to live view. The mirror remains locked up.

The level of vibration generated by the two systems is significantly greater in the D90.

I looked at my Panasonic G3 and it, of course, does not have a mirror, but it does have a double shutter that is quite noisy.

My Samsung NX-10 is quiet, but I can't test it since the body will not fire without a lens in place. I stopped using it for other imaging reasons than the shutter.

Could other photographers out there with different live view cameras take a moment to check their camera/model and let me know if this is common to all Nikon cameras, Other Canon cameras, or other camera systems. Thanks.

When scrolling through Mindat's photo galleries I can see lots of excellent photographs of micro mounts but not very many of larger specimens.
The reason for this might be that people who specialize on micro photos are mostly real experts while photographs of larger specimens (measuring at least 1cm) are usually made by collectors like myself who are more interested in collecting than in photographing.
With this thread I want to invite all collectors to show her/his best photographs of specimens larger than 1cm. Everybody can show his own favorites (but not more than 5) side by side. These photos can be exchanged whenever somebody thinks she/he has new better ones. This can easily be done with the 'edit' button.
The photos should not be commented afterwards. That would tear apart the row of pictures.
The result might be a very nice collection if many follow my example. Please, don't let me stand alone with my pictures!

I'm planning on attending the NY/NJ Metro Gem and Mineral Show in April and plan on doing a lot of photography of the exhibits. I'll be giving talks about the exhibits and the show to various clubs in Houston and Texas. Since there are plans for a large exhibit of fluorescent minerals by the Franklin Museum and the Sterling Hill Mine and Museum I'll want to photograph these also. While I have a lot of experience photographing normal mineral displays I have none regarding fluorescent displays. I've found threads about photographing fluorescent minerals under studio conditions, but none about hand-held photography of fluorescent displays at shows. I'll be using a Nikon D7000 body and I have an 18-70 zoom, an 18-270 zoom, a 105 macro and a 50mm prime available. I use a Metz 58AF-2 flash for standard case photography.

Any and all suggestions from experienced UV collectors and photographers are appreciated. Thanks.

I have determined that most of the really good images I see on Mindat originate with Canon cameras. I suspect this has to do with the "silent mode" (near shutterless exposure) that Canon offers. Perviously I have used a Nikon D200 that had mirror lock up and an Olympus that had low vibration and got superior images with them (both were stolen from my office a few years ago). Since then I've used a Nikon D90 and a Panasonic NX-10 for my imaging with reasonable results. Recently I've moved to stacking software and extreme magnification using microscope objectives and have found some "shutter shake" that degrades even the stacked and processed images. I'm curious if other photomicrographers on Mindat have any comments about this? Thanks.

Hi all photomicrographers. I am embarrassed to proclaim this for all of the mindat community to see, but I will anyway, as a warning to you who like photographing through your microscopes. I have been less that satisfied with many of my results lately. I did not know why I was not getting the sharpness to which I've become accustomed. This evening, I found out what the problem has been and I fixed it. Don't laugh ! Apparently the extra weight of the camera plus adaptor has been causing the scope body to drop on its own ever so slowly. So I tightened up the focus. Ta Da !

One of our members gave me a formula for the approximate number of frames needed for a certain depth of field. I find that I generally make many more than that. So I tried going with my gut on the first photo, greatly increasing the amount I move the scope the second photo and even greater on the third. I went from 141 frames on the first to 52 on the second and 24 on the third. This is close to the amount the formula gave me for about a 1 mm DOF. It seems to me they aren't a whole lot different, but I'm unable to see them all at the same time. I don't know if there is a program that allows you to put several on the screen at once. It at least showed me that I was doing many, many more than I needed to.

I've been taking pictures for a few weeks now and I guess it's time to get some help. My camera, the Lumenera Infinity 1-3C doesn't seem to be like most other cameras. It's just a box that sits on top of the scope with a cord attaching it to the computer. All settings are done through the computer.

I've been shooting from the hip, adjusting the slider bars the best I can tell, but I don't even know what some of them do. And often I can't see a great deal of difference in the subject as I adjust them. Anyway, if someone could help me understand or send me to a site that explains the following, I would appreciate it.

Here are all the settings:

exposure from .032 to 500 ms
average intensity from 0 to 255
continuous auto exposure
gain from 1 to 3.875
gamma from .01 to 5
saturation from 0 to 2
hue from -180 to 180
brightness from -100 to 100
contrast from -100 to 100

The three in boldface type are the ones I don't really understand.

Also, the only other adjustment I've been making is to crop the pictures and I'm using Picasa, which came with the computer. Is PhotoShop the best program to make other changes? I know in some of the posts here people claim that the PhotoShopping is a major part of the picture making.

I really appreciate any assistance at all.

Thanks.

I bought Helicon Focus about a month ago, along with a Canon EOS 60D and EF-S 60 Marco lens, and have been very impressed with the results. However, I have been having problems when using Helicon Remote. The program seems to freeze up when I am part way through shooting a stack of images and I have to unplug the camera, reconnect and go through the set-up procedure again. It doesn't do it all of the time, I can successfully shoot stacks of 20-30 images with no problems sometimes, but other times it will take a few shots and then stop shooting and become unresponsive. Occasionally, it won't even take the first shot.

I was wondering if anyone else had experienced similar problems?

I have an Olympus SZH10 research stereo microscope and am looking to get my first digital camera to take pictures of my micromounts. My Olympus salesman wants to sell me a Lumenera Infinity camera but the best one I might be able to afford has only 5 megapixels. He tells me that a camera with 24 megapixels is no better because it would show only a tiny area on my specimen (it would be too magnified). Is this true? Or would I be better buying the 24 mp camera? Thanks for your help.

Hi all,
To start with: great photo by one of the greatest minerals photographers.
BUT:
Is this already forgotten:
In which is stated that most probably 99 % (if not all) photographs on Mindat of Poldervaartites should be in reality Olmiites.
Thing is that the "older "specimens from Wessels were found before Olmiite was discovered and later it was proved that these older Poldervaartites were mostly Olmiites:
Anatoly Kasatkin:
Now I have a strong suggestion that all the poldervaartites that filled the mineral market (including all pictured on mindat) are in fact olmiites.
It needs to be said that even the analysis given by the authors of poldervaartite for the homogenous grain of holotype material showed dominance of Mn over Ca.
So the question about POTD is: is the specimen analysed?
OK, it comes out of an old collection, but at the time they did not know better and labelled them all "Poldervaartite" because Olmiite had not been "discovered" then.
So: great photo but very debatable id.

The Franklin Mineral Museum has announced its support of a book project featuring photographs of minerals from the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mining District. Photographers worldwide are invited to submit high quality photographs to be considered in the book and full credit for the image will appear in the caption of the book. The only stipulations are that the image be the copyright property of the submitter and that the image can be printed at 350 dpi with a print size of 10 x 12.5 cm or larger. For most images, the jpg file size should be at least 2-3 megabytes, while tif/tiff files may need to be larger. Subjects may be common or rare species, cabinet-sized specimens to micromounts, specimens illuminated in white light or ultraviolet, crystals or massive minerals, or other useful specimen images. It is estimated that there will be at least 1000 images printed in the book and there will probably be a companion CD set for additional images. Additional details are found at [www.newryqs.com]
Many of Franklin's treasures are in international collections, both public and private, and the Museum would like to include images of as many great specimens as possible. Publication date is anticipated for the Autumn 2014 Franklin Gem and Mineral Show.

Hi All

After a significant attempt at documenting my collection I am still not happy with the end result! I am looking at the images on my iPad and they are not appearing as sharp or as crisp as I was hoping the would be. I have attempted many thing, have a tripod and full lighting setup and wondering if it might be down to the limitations of the equipment.

I am using a canon EOS 500D with a 18-55mm lens that comes with the camera, and a 50mm F2.8 DG Macro lens. I tend to use 1/10 shutter speed, F14 and ISO200-400 but these can vary slightly - any advice would be great!

Thanks

Hail all. I recently got myself a used Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT 8mp & a Sigma DG 70-300mm F4-5.6 lens for the purpose of macro photography. It fit my budget.

I am trying to find the best setting to take a proper mineral picture. Any Suggestions?

I been playing around with it a bit & i encounter the problem of loosing depth of field, any way to correct this?

I don't use the flash, i use a lens hood & my daylight lighting setup.
Any hints on taking proper mineral pictures would be much appreciated.

I've recently started playing with Macnification, a program specifically targeting Mac users. I stacked a few images and then used the "Focused Image" feature, which very nicely added the photomicrographs together to give me a gorgeous focused image with excellent depth of field. To my dismay, I noticed that the resultant image was huge (over 70 MB) and thus I could not email it to anyone.
Does anyone have any experience with Macnification and can thus tell me how to reduce the number of MB's ?
Does anyone have a photo or photomicrograph of stokesite from Roscommon Cliff, Cornwall (type locality). It's an absolutely wonderful specimen but it's absolutely impossible to get a photo of it that does it justice. If I illuminate one crystal face, another is muted due to it's clarity. I've come to the conclusion I either need incredibly tiny independent light sources and photoshop, or this specimen just cannot be properly appreciated without binocular vision.

A problem that occurs when I try to finish a pic.
After stacking I use my Nikon Capture NX2 (not photoshop!) to resharpen and smoothly change colours so that it looks like the original specimen.
I`m satisfied with the pic, watch it on my LCD screen and add it to mindat.

Then I`m wondering. The sharpness has gone - well this happens due to resizing - but more and more often the colours have changed even when watching it with the same LCD.

Take this one as example: [www.mindat.org]
While reworking its ok, maybe a bit too greenish but I can live with it. Adding it on mindat and its waaay to red!
Am I doing something wrong???
