Only from Canada, eh?

With a nod to the Red Rose Tea commercials from years ago (Only in Canada, eh? Pity!) and other similar threads like the Down Under and zeolites and pseudos, I thought I'd start a Canadian version.

I am curious to see what others might have by way of Canadian minerals in their collection. Care to join in?

To get things started, here's a quartz thumbnail from Nova Scotia.

Locality: Guysborough Co., Nova Scotia, Canada
2.7 x 1.2 x 1.0 cm

I look forward to your posts!

Hi Mike,

I would say this is a fairly hi temp alteration of the schorl at this locality, not weathering. I cannot hazard a guess as to the cause of it / mechanism of alteration. Partial pseudomorphs exist: [www.mindat.org]

Great stuff here, everyone.
But John, I found the schorl ps muscovite really intriguing. (Did I abbreviate that correctly?)
Does tourmaline weather into mica? Is it some other process? Is it even known what the process is?
I have read that tourmaline is very durable, a book on sand (a real action packed read!) mentioned that RTZ is an abbreviation for what traces of other minerals are regularly found in sand, since they are so durable, the 3 being rutile, tourmaline and zircon.
Are there other similar pseudomorphs or ones halfway-there around? Must be of impressive geologic age...
Thanks for sharing.

So, after discovering that they use herkimer diamonds in the filtering process, I had a number of questions...

What kind of "herks" do they use? NY or "Tibetan"?
How often do they change the filters?
What do they do with the discarded used herks?
How does this consumptive process affect the world price of herks? LOL

And most importantly, how did Dan Akroyd come up with this filtering idea ???

All in all it is regarded as a premium vodka, now we know why. It was banned in Ontario until last year until they improved the packaging so the skull wasn't so "offensive". LOL.

I wonder if I send a query through their official web site if they would answer my questions? We'll have to see about that.

Hello Rob,

We bought it from David Garske in 2011, and it was originally from the Mineral Zone dated Oct.2008. The label only said Hauyne, Quebec,Canada. Since Oka is the only locality in Quebec with Hauyne we assumed it was from there. Looks like Hauyne to me, will run a few tests on it to confirm.

Nice piece Maggie!

I'm glad you explained the story about how it formed, because it has such an unusual look to it. That's one of those pieces that if it showed up on the Identify thread here, I'd have probably suggested barite from that angled view! What a neat looking piece and nicely photographed too.

Hi Phil,

Inflation strikes! (toonie for scale in your photo) But then, I guess we won't be able to use shiny new Canadian pennies much longer, as the mint is no longer making them.

Cheers,

Sorry Tim! I know you're an avid Ontario minerals collector but they are just out of Ontario, in Wakefield, Quebec. They weren't analyzed, but are definitely wollastonite (characteristic fracture and cleavage on the broken samples - how I enjoy those little needles that painfully penetrate fingertips). The Canadian Museum of Nature got 3 of the top samples for their collection, and agree on the ident.
