After reading the article by Mr Rob Woodside concerning Mr Joseph Freilich, i felt the need to make known my experience with Joseph.
I have known Joe for several years now, having had numerous dealings with him during this time. Over this period i purchased several high-end & quite expensive specimens. On these pieces Joe offered "on approval" & payment arrangements, where i was able to pay them off over an extended time. I have never had a problem with specimens purchased from Joe.
I have found Joe to be a honest, sincere, and thorough gentleman. Consequently, i am amazed by the accusations leveled at the character of the man. To illustrate my bewilderment: last year i had the pleasure of staying with Joe at his home in N.Y., at his invitation. During this time my mobile phone failed me. Joe paid for the phone bill i incurred, on his phone, in trying to rectify the mess my phone company caused me.
Also, i can truely state that the man does have serious health issues (of which i will not detail)... which only angers me the more, given the comments made at him suggests that this may only be an excuse. *Forgive me Joe for touching on something personal, without your consent.
Surely this whole affair must be down to misconception or misunderstanding, as i can not speak more highly of Joseph. He remains a true friend, great source of unique specimens, and a "friendly" dealer with integrity.
Different museums have different accession/deaccession policies (some of which can be found on their websites). These days most museums do not like to accept donations with strings.

I am considering writing about museums and their policys on donations, either single specimens or collections. It will be massive research and an ongoing publication as there are so many musuems, large and small...and schools, etc.
People want to know what happens to their collections after donating and most seem to be in the dark about exactly how one goes about donating.
Surely all museums have different guidelines?
Please correct me if there is already an up to date database on this?
If there is, most people I talk with are just as unaware of it as I am.

Do you know of any gypsum/alabaster mines in Australia and New Zealand? If you do know, please give them my name and email: doddmarblesculpture@msn.com

Hi all

Four issues of the Australian and New Zealand Mineral Collector Magazine have so far been published in 2007 (one every three months). The next issue is due out in March 2008.

Interested in penning an article? I am looking for input into upcoming issues. Preference given to articles on Australian or New Zealand locations, minerals, show reports, field trips, or trips overseas by 'locals'. I won't say no to articles from other regions either.

Hi Don,
I knew Cliffs mother and father Edith & Cliff.
I collected with them on many occasions as I lived most of my young life in Brunswick. I know Edith was very bitter about her son for suing her over
control of the extensive collection she and her two children had amassed over the years. I only know Edith's side of the story however but I suspect that you are referencing something related to this. When I knew her she had formally disowned her son. I am pretty sure Edith is gone now as she was quite elderly when I saw her last in the mid 80's. I can only hope she reconciled with her son. I really enjoyed spending time with Edith and Cliff Sr.
talking minerals and collecting. I have seen the Uraninite crystals Edith had stashed away behind a wall in her small shop. Spectacular! She trusted me enough to show them to me. She knew I was interested in radioactives. She even let me saw a Ruggles mine uraninite/gummite specimine in half and polish it flat so I could
experiment with autoradiographs. It is a wonder I didn't develop a uranium body burden. I have been working in the US Commercial Nuclear Power industry since 1984 and as such am required to have a body count at every plant I work at (I'm a contractor). I have never shown positive for uranium or any other radionucleides associated with this ore locality
other than the normal enviromental ones (Carbon 14 & Potassium 40). I am sure we contaminated her equipment and shop though.

All in all these fine folks were good friends and encouraged me when I was a young collector.

If this is going to be an ongoing effort, I found myself being very attracted to having regular articles from various museums, small and/or large, national or regional, from around the world ie: invite a focus from one museum each issue. Let the curator go wild and give us a virtual view of their stuff.

What a way to get international exposure for distant or even local museum collections, that might otherwise not even be known or whose specimens aren't able to be well exposed, since most museums have limitations on displaying due to financial constraints [I have heard that very few have more than a few percents of their entire collections available for viewing].

The idea of the mineral of the month, normally would turn me off, but if this dimension was added to a museum section, then invites could be given to museums everywhere to show , for example, their best or most unique Erythrite or Pyrite or whatever, that month. Then we would have a window into the best of the best in specific minerals each and every month..

Does this appeal to anyone?
