I got the Atlas about 5 years ago and have used it very little. I was disappointed with the quality of the images but lately am beginning to wonder if it's not some peculiarity of my system (currently Mac OS 10.8, latest Adobe reader). I tried adjusting the contrast and brightness but that didn't help. I'll attach a typical photo. Has anyone else had such concerns?

I have already done this and got a good under ground drawing of South Caradon main adit as it stands now with photos. I have converted it to CAD and sent a copy back to the owner, who is very please with the results. It is mainly minerl photos I need, of very good specimen.

Hi Alan
Firstly we need to have the location registered in Mindat, and we didnt have this one. I have just added the mine under Coffs Harbour, the nearest major town I think? : [www.mindat.org] If you can add any general info on the mine, and Lat/Long, please do, and a reference (your book ?).
Next step is to add the minerals known from the site, using the Edit/add minerals tab on the location website, again with references where possible.
Third step is to add photos, most easily done from the location page with the Edit/add photo tab.
Any problems, let us know?

Hi Chris,

The twinned beryl question seems a bit of a gamble to me. I’m sure part of your grade will depend on how well you made your topic understandable to a non-geologist. You have to cover crystal structure and symmetry as a foundation, then introduce the topic of twinning in crystals. Then you get to the issue of why people are unsure about whether this crystal really is a true twin.

High-tech analysis is big these days, in most any field of geology. Radioactive isotopes or radiogenic isotopes (such as in rare earth elements) in minerals tell us about Earth age and history of rocks exposed at the surface–some came from the mantle, for example, and these isotopes may help you decide their source. Stable isotopes, such as for carbon and oxygen, recovered from sedimentary rocks, and especially from shells of marine organisms, can provide clues about ancient climates and ocean water composition over time. Just writing about those could be a topic in itself. However, you could also add some material about how isotopes are differentiated instrumentally. There are a lot of sources on-line showing photos of the instruments and schematic diagram of the analytical “protocol.” Some theme associated with isotopes would be a “natural” for a prospective mineralogist. You could also write about x-ray crystallography if you want go more with crystallography. And, as Keith suggested, you may be able to go to a lab, perhaps at a university or geological survey office, to see the instrumention. Maybe take a rock you collected and see if someone will run XRD (x-ray diffraction) on it and let you take a copy of the print-out to use as an illustration. That may not be possible, considering people’s schedules, but you never know until you ask. That would knock your teacher’s socks off!

HI Chris
If I google "mississippi quarries" (after I finally spelt it correctly !!!) there are clearly quarries and mines in your state. Including some with what appears to be interesting archeological interest. Just need to select one of interest and perhaps be as close as possble to where you live.

Mind you I am used to driving over 300 kms round trip just to go to a social dance or perhaps I don't mind driving !!

Surely there must be some areas of mineralogical interest in MS. Doesn't have to be a quarry.

Perhaps there are some interesting geological features that you coould write about and explain/analysis the effects of climate change on the region over time and how that has contributed to the present features and then surmise how that may develop further over time given different climate changes (which would then incorporate the geology and meteorology)

Perhaps a visit to the MS geological survey may provide some assistance - even talk with some of the professional geologist staff there for some ideas. Chat to someone at the MS Geological Society

There are also the lead and zinc deposits of the upper MS valley districts.
Not knowing much about your course, just some suggestions.
Cheers

Hello all,

Next Monday I will be assigned a project in which I need to write a proposal, followed up with a paper, on a topic of my choice for a Geowriting course.
The instructor has left the topic base open as anything having to do with geology, meteorology, or geography as it pertains to our own major, mine being a BS in Professional Geology. I have already asked him if I could do a research paper on Mineralogy and have received the green light, but cannot seem to think of a good topic. All i know for sure is that mineralogy and crystallography is what I am most interested in.

I believe I read a post somewhere, possibly here or Jordi Fabre's forum about *I think* the rarity of twinned emeralds, and that sounds like a very interesting topic as Beryl is my favorite crystal.

On topic however, I wanted to know what others would suggest for a good research topic for a Junior undergrad student.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated,
Chris Kyler

*EDIT - after a quick search I found the article, any idea how I could turn this topic into a proposal then a research paper?

This is a wonderful resource - lighter weight and smaller size than the paper edition, and much more available. It is very well set up and perhaps the best disk with mineral information, that I have ever seen.

I have 2 questions:
1. Is it okay by you for me to download the disk onto own home computer (only for uses as permitted in the "Read Me" note). These new computers have so much storage space (if so, I would have to make a separate folder, what should be its name). If so, this would be downloaded only on own computer (others can buy their own copies from mindat.org). What is your policy regarding this possibility?
2. If I use a diagram in an article, I would want to properly attribute and credit the source (referring to Goldschmidt's Atlas, via DVD by mindat.org, or something like that?. What is the best way to do this (perhaps an example might help?).

How Does One Adjust the Dimensions of a "Table of Contents"

Hello,

Here is a simple question for a "code savvy" person.

I added a Table of Contents (toc) to a new article I wrote. The article is titled Fluorspar of the Moria Lake Region.

I used the code "<toc>Table of Contents<toc>", I think that was it.................that is not relevent. I have a beautiful Table of Contents in my article and all the headings do function as links to the headings in the article.

My problem/question......if you look at my article, the toc is far to wide. It's appearence is not exactly nice.

Is there a way to adjust the dimensions of a toc????? Maybe not so much the heighth because that would depend on the number of headings. Is there a way to adjust the width???? Can you give me the code to do this???

Thank you

As a follow up note............here is the code:
<PBOX width=5><PIC id=xxxxx float=left> </PIC><PIC id=xxxxx float=left> </PIC><PIC id=xxxxx float=left> </PIC><PIC id=xxxxx float=left> </PIC><PIC id=xxxxx float=left> </PIC></PBOX>

Rock Currier,

After hours of experimentation..................I came up with the same code as you offered me.

I discovered the "width number" is the part of the code relating to the number of photos you wish to display.

Since I wanted 5 photos, I put the number 5 in the width and......BOOM.....it works. (see my page now).

Still working on how to remove the name and locations printed below photos. All I want is a simple, wordless photo thumbnail.

Thank you very much for your help - maybe you know how to achieve what I'm looking for??????

Your friend
Try this code string:

<PBOX width=4><PIC id=XXXX float=left>Pic 1</PIC><PIC id=XXXX float=left>Pic 2</PIC><PIC id=XXXX float=left>Pic 3</PIC><PIC id=XXXX float=left>Pic 4</pic></PBOX>

It should give you 4 TNs left to right.

Hi all,

Just need a little help.

I have added an article to my home page and wanted to add five photos( thumbnails) at the very end of the article.

I was able to get three of the five posted using the code <pic id=17886 float=left> </pic><pic id=18507 float=left> </pic><pic id=18508 float=left> </pic> where the pic numbers are my own photos. Obviously I have tried numerous combinations of the examples in the help page but have gotten nowhere.

Is it possible to get 4 photos across and the last 1 below these 4???????? If so can you offer the code???????

Or can I get 1 photo in the center and 1 photo to each side of the center photo???????? Then 2 photos below these????????

I'm just looking for a pleasing pattern, symetrical.

If you look at my home page you can see what I am refering to. The code I used got three posted....how to post last two????

Thank you
