I have been slowly cleaning the specimens I found on the May 5th trip and I found several examples of bi-color fluorite. The first type is small amounts of purple on green. See the two images. I have also found a few examples of a light blue and green. I haven't been able to get a good picture of these yet. I don't know if the light blue and green type is the result of sun bleaching.
It's not that far from Chelyabinsk, where there was a recent celebrated meteorite strike. Would there be anyone interested in hunting the strewn field, or at least selling specimens?

The link to our Web page on Maine mineral collecting is:

Thanks, Jeremy, for the above link to the Mt. Apatite page.

Unfortunately, the Callahan Mine has been declared a Superfund hazardous waste remediation site, so the property is off-limits to the public. It was probably the only place in Maine where you could go and easily collect large masses of chalcopyrite and sphalerite, as well as a wide range of secondary minerals. Great stuff for collectors and educators.

Mt. Apatite is a decent publicly available site to collect at. The quarries at this locality are known to produce a variety of both common and rare pegmatite minerals. Although the area has been collected heavily, there is still a very good potential to find nice specimens. The site is perfect for a day trip.

As Geoffrey said, the Maine Geological Survey is a very good resource. If you're down for a longer trip, I recommend checking out localities in central and Eastern Maine which are often overlooked. Many localities in this portion of the state are somewhat different than the more classic pegmatite and skarn localities in Western Maine. Kyle mentioned the Callahan Mine, a large VMS deposit that would certainly be interesting to check out too.

Hi Eddie,

a late reply, probably you have made your travel plans already. I won't be at Elba this year, for another reason I go in even years only. But, some advises/experiences. I started with the info you can find in the Elba trip report on the trinityminerals page. When reading it, remember, this was about 10 years ago, and not precisely legal already then.

About 2004 I was at Grotta di Oggi. It's east of the street connecting San Piero and San Ilario in Campo. From my topographical map and also the map Luca posted above it should be outside of the geo park. I believe it's private property, so a permission should be asked for. I admit I didn't. Ignorant as I was, I first searched in the old vein, where I found only ugly schorl. Later I decided to turn upside down the boulders in the dump. I think I came down close to 1 meter, without finding to much. Leaving the area, just outside San Ilario on the street I met two more than meter long vipers (in combat or heat, whatever), which vanished in a similar shrub area as the quarry hosts. So, sturdy shoes, strong pants (even in the summer heat), and don't go alone (not only for the vipers). In the last years, in the area some new finds of Elbaite where made, but I think all west of the before mentioned road. And, usually with really heavy equipment.

2008 I was at Rio Marina, paying my fee to enter the park. They let you go to Bacino, one of the lower quarries. There was only hematite, I found some with small quartz crystals associated. Nice, but nothing spectacular. Some other guy digged in the dump, and found some small pyrite.

2012 again Rio Marina. I thought to be clever and had some digging equipment. It wasn't necessary. This time there was a huge pyrite boulder which we were cutting pieces of. Small crystals, nothing spectacular. Some iridecent hematite. They must turn upside down the dump occasionally, so each year you may find something else.

The park offers also the possibility for a 1/2 day hike in the quarries. I don't know if this is organized with a guide, and you have to follow a path, or you really can roam around freely and hits stones wherever you like. On the web site (Luca posted the URL above) they sell also a movie of the quarry. This movie was made with the participation of some renowned Italian mineralogists (one of them, Lorenzoni, even lives close to my place, though I don't know him personally). If you contact one of them, they may be able to treat for you with the park administration.

I also learned in 2012 that there are guides tours to the Calamita area too. It's on my roaster for 2014. Though I don't think there lays some copper around, but some magnetite and some copper minerals? Why not.

Hope that helps,

Yes, I've seen those. I guessed that they might be hematite or martite. Many of them weather in place to earthy hematite that then fills the vugs in which they formed. They're beautiful under a stereo microscope. I think another name for this material is specularite.

Hi Kelly,

It looks like you might have found a pink topaz. It's rare but has been found in the area. Some of the vugs I've examined are lined with tiny pink topaz crystals that, aside from the crystal habit, look like rose quartz. I just got back from water blasting the clay-filled pockets and will return in three weeks to sift the gravel I dislodged.

Congratulations on your find,

Didn't think I found a topaz last week, but this one was stuck in some pocket clay at the bottom of my bag. Small (8 mm.) and raggedy, but a complete crystal and good enough to cross Hill Country topaz off my bucket list. Looking at the bottom, with the diamond-shaped cross-section and the basal cleavage was the giveaway. Thanks for the opportunity, Frank!
