Our magnificent Covellite Rosette specimen has been stolen. The thief broke one of our display glass domes at the base where it was screwed into a wooden block. They pocketed the Covellite and replaced the specimen with another mineral thinking that we would not notice that the Covellite was gone. Our last known view of the specimen was December 29 when a professional photographer we hired for marketing purposes took a photo of the specimen …and others. We have reported the loss to the police, insurance company, and I am in the process of notifying the gem and mineral people about the loss. Keith Proctor, owner of many of the crystals we have on display in our Crystal Room (that once housed the Rosette) valued the piece at between $40,000 and $50,000.

The specimen was entrusted to Ms. Sumiya Swoboda, to be auctioned with other pieces at Butterfield's in Los Angeles on May 21st, 1999. Apparently the piece was never submitted to Butterfield's; they have no record of it. The price Ihad put on it at the time was $3600. According to Ms. Swoboda she sent it out on approval to an unnamed party, who refused to pay or return the specimen. I have never been compensated for the loss.

The specimen comes from an artisanal mining field at Bitou in southern Burkina Faso. The specimen was retrieved from a weathered quartz vein in an area of native workings. It has some original vein quartz attached and in total weighs 238 g , 7.65 troy oz. The dimensions are 2 3/4" x 2" x 1 1/4", 7 x 5 x 3 cm. I had reserve of $ 3,600.

The long delay in posting the loss is due to the fact that I was only recently able to find photos I had taken of the piece in 1999. The piece is from an unusual locality in Africa and I would like it back if possible or be compensated for it.

This just came through on MSA Talk list

Hello, everyone,

My apologies for cross-postings.
I hope to make you aware of a major theft of meteorites.
I've worked with Don Cline and the Pisgah Atronomical Research Institute
(PARI) staff before, so I'm pitching in to spread the word.

Over Christmas Eve, the PARI facility was burglarized and about
100 meteorites stolen. There's good security footage of the three
thieves on the following links.

[www2.wspa.com]

Electronics should be easy to flog, but meteorites less so.
If these chuckleheads cross your paths, please let the Transylvania County,
North Carolina police know.
They were mounted on stands with price, and a serial number even. I have many pictures to verify. If any dealers run into these, I'd love to get them back. One was 19 x 9 mm 16.4ct. One, 12x17mm 23.1ct. And a 17 x 15 at 21.7ct. If you run into one, send me a picture and if i can, I'll send back my picture of the same one to verify. Luckily this happened right after I catalogued them.
I recieved a parcel from parcelforce today which was slightly damaged with a thumb sized hole through the box and a little scuffing around one of the edges. When I opened the parcel it was empty, except for a small aqua sample/present from the seller. The parcel was sent from Austria to the UK.

The specimen is a 16.2cm x 2.5cm aquamarine from Madagascar....

Please keep your eyes open for me, I suspect it has been stolen.

To whom this may concern

I am just curious... I had a nice black xls which I was glad to sell at the time. I am just curious where it landed.

I remember in the 80"s so long ago I was a welder in a quarry called the Sunset Quarry in Glastonbury Ct. I was always an undercover mineralogist, so I foudn this big seam of decayed pegmatite. Big chunks (20lbs?) of gray quartz full of muscovite xls was washed down a kaolinite flow. I found dark (black) manganese garnets that some one had tested I think. Then there was this black, about 3cm x 2cm x2cm heavy, kind of eugenic xls with growth etching patterns. I think it was metalic black. I think Bruce Jarnot may have had it at one point. Soem onen told me it was identified as ixiolite. If it was....It was the biggest xl of ixiolite I ever saw from Conn or anywhere. It would be good to add a record of that to the Mindat locality for the Sunset Quarry. Too bad I lost so many specimens in moving, I remember interesting manganese crust minerals in the quartzite that Dick Schooner and I collected. So I was curious as to who may have this crystal? Is it really ixiolite? or maybe columbite??
Is it for sale? Is there a photo of it? or is it lost?
Missing from its case in my very secure rock room, a place of limited access, very puzzling how it could disappear. May not have been a recent event, the barites are in a darker area of the room, to preserve color.

A Daybreak Mine autunite specimen, about 3 inches x 2 inches x 1/4 inch thick, was stolen from the Dragon Minerals booth at the West Coast Fall show in Santa Ana, Cailfornia, sometime in the early afternoon on Friday November 11. The crystals are yellow-green, and foliated. The accompanying label is grey, half the size of a standard business card, bearing a hand-written price tag of 600 in black ink. The tag itself is printed in black ink, with a surfing dragon logo, and the name of the company (Dragon Minerals) and url in red. The back of the label bears an inventory number (14211) hand-written in black ink.It may also have a Dave Bunk minerals label.
Even without the label, the specimen is clearly identifiable as an above-average Daybreak Mine autunite.

ATTENTION! ATTENTION! - QUICK ACTION REQUIRED:

About 15 very fine gold specimens were stolen from the main exhibit hall of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum on the afternoon of July 27, 2011. This was a smash-and-grab operation that had to be accomplished within a 20-minute time window. We ask that dealers and collectors be alert for any sudden influx of fine gold specimens being offered from other than the usual sources. For the time being the museum president does not wish photos of the stolen specimens to be widely circulated, but the museum has good photo coverage of all specimens taken.

If anyone has information to offer, please call the Sterling Hill Mining Museum at 973-209-7212 and ask for Dick Hauck, Bob Hauck, or Earl Verbeek, or send e-mail to Earl Verbeek at everbeek@ptd.net. A hefty reward is being offered for the successful recovery of these specimens and capture of the thief.
Subject: Mike Meehan brownstone quarry track stolen

Mike Meehan (Portland Brownstone quarry owner) had a really really nice Eubrontes track stolen last night (July 13th 2011). As a nice guy he shows people around when they show up etc. On Wed a young-ish fellow (to be named once Mike talks to police etc.) came and asked if he was selling any tracks and Mike said "no" but showed him some that he uses for demos when field trips visit etc.

This morning part of his fence was cut and the track was gone. It is heavy, so they slid it along using an old oil pan so the path of the stolen track from its location and out the fence was visible. So within 12 hours or less since Mike spoke with the collector, the very track he showed him disappeared (?).

This guy is apparently an active collector and told Mike he collected from Wethersfield Cove boat launch as well as other places. I'm sure that is either state or town property and collecting there would be illegal.

Please keep an ear to the ground and and eye out if anyone tries to sell or talks about a nice large Eubrontes.

If you have a picture of the track from the quarry that would help the police to identify the track, please send me a pic if you
have one.

"Hi All

Just letting you know that there was a recent theft of minerals here in Broken Hill. The minerals had belonged to Bill O'Neill and were part of his deceased estate. They were in plastic boxes out in the back shed and were taken sometime in the last week.
The theft has been reported to the police and a family friend of Bill has contacted me to get the word out to be on watch for any (suspicious) person suddenly trying to sell off some minerals to any of our members.

If you are approached please inquire as to how they got the minerals... you can usually work out if they are lying.

On January 4th or 5th Minerals Unlimited was broken into. Many specimens were stolen, including our green fuzzy "velvet" malachite specimen that has been in Ralph E. Merrill's collection since the 1950's and still belongs to Mimi Merrill, my mother. I know the picture is not very large, but it's the best I can do on short notice. I suspect that the burglars were stupid teens, and probably simply grabbed the specimen, which would have destroyed it. If they were smarter than I think they were, they would have handled this delicate specimen carefully, and it will show up for sale at some point. It's about 3.5 by 5.5 inches in size, from the Copper Queen Mine in Bisbee. While they took the label for this specimen, they left behind the labels for all of the other items they took, so I don't think they have any idea what they were doing.
If anyone sees it, we would like to know!

HELLO, any help would be appreciated on this.
I was in edinburgh for the frindge and a mineral show last friday night ( 20th august ) and my bag was stolen from the greenside place / top of leith walk area of edinburgh.
in my bag were various items but unfortunately there was a box of gemstone facets and cabachons containing 12 fire obsidian cabs / about 100 cts of pink fire quartz and assorted other cabachons including brown lace calcite from peru / indian green moonstone / a one carat square emerald and 2 gaspeite cabs. ! a total of nearley £3000.
the majority of these are rare stones and unusual in the uk. i was going to get a friend to set them that weekend. this is a culmination of 8 years work for me and as you can imagine this is a big blow to me and my business.
if anyone has any information or has been offered these stones for sale in the uk i dont have photos but could recognise each and every single one of them as they are all part of my collection.
if anyone hears of anything or could advise me further about contacting a large range of jewellers in edinburgh. please let me know.
