Need help pricing my geode

I've been holding on to this geode for well over 10 years, and It's been sitting in a display cabinet the entire time, untouched by human hands except to blow dust off of it. I know that it's an impeccable specimen, but I have no idea how much it's worth, and have been unable to find anyone able to tell me the value of a specimen like this. Please help!

Attached are 2 photos I took.

Also, here is some additional information about it:

- The outside of the geode measures 5" across, and 5.5" top to bottom.

- The inside of the geode measures 3" across, and 3.5" top to bottom.

- The clear crystal measures between 3/4" and 1".

Once again, please help!
-Alan

This thread spans 5 pages and nearly 2 years in time. It also refers to many different geodes. I am not sure Leor and/or Simone realize this. It might help if you followed the thread and the different geode examples and then referred to the specific one that you wish to comment on!! The Mexican one with the calcite is 2 years old and out dated. CHEERS..........BOB

Hello...can anybody help me? I have a crystal geode that is huge. Probably weighs over 30 lbs and sits on a small wooden pedestal. I have 2 but one fell out of my car and broke. It is in several pieces but one piece is still quite large. It measures about 16" high X 8"W at the base. Can anyone help me with a value and to sell it?

This is the correct forum to help you determine the value of specimens. The first step is to attach pictures of what it is you have. Then people will tive you their estimate of what if anything the stuff is worth. This web site is not a forum for you to advertise stuff for sale but you can ask for advice about who might be able to sell the stuff for you. It is also possible that you might receive private messages from members regarding your stuff. But many dealers pay for advertising here and you are not allowed to overtly advertise that the specimens are for sale. Its a fine line.

I agree that your photos are not of good quality, but they appear to show a medium size amethyst "geode" of rather ordinary type. Try to sell it to an individual who will both appreciate it and, perhaps, pay you a bit more than you would get selling it on ebay or to a dealer.
Your pictures are poor, but I can tell you that what you have is a portion of an amethyst geode from Rio Grande do sul and from the photo I think it is about the $5 per kg class you can buy thousands of pounds of in that Brazilian state. The people that import that kind of material usually charge about $5 per pound and you could expect to see it for $10 to $20 per pound in retail shops depending on how much overhead the shop owner has to pay. Check on ebay. There should be lots of similar pieces for sale.

I saw you on Mindat (your replies anyway). so I thought I would run my pix by you..it weighs 24.5 lbs.
Thank you for any help or guidance....my husband has recently passed and the financial hardships are setting in on me and our 13 yr old son.

EJ, If your son and you are especially interested in geodes, as many youngsters are, go on this website and type in "Midwest Sedimentary Geodes" in the "search" area for some pix and descriptions of hi quality display geodes. Also, a word of caution: Ebay has many unopened geodes from the American Midwest for sale. The vast number of these, when opened, will disappoint you so be wary of bidding on them. One good opened geode is worth far more (not only monetarily, but display wise etc) in the long run than 10 or 20 unopened ones that, when opened, are of very poor quality and disappoint.
Hi Bob and Jolyon,
Thank you for your help guys. Amethyst is my son's birthstone, too, but he just likes "cool" rocks. I think the whole family would enjoy going to some rock shows. The geodes, in particular, are fascinating!

EJ, First of all congrats on winning the auction; hopefully your 11 y.o. son will continue to appreciate the specimen and others like it!! From your pix, it does appear to be part of a large amethyst "geode" with good large dark purple crystals. While I don't think you got much of a real bargain, I also think you didn't overpay too much. In other words I would put a value of $200 - $300 on this kind of an amethyst geode specimen. If you had purchased this in person, at a large rock show, maybe with negotiation you could have picked it up for $175 - $200.
Most importantly enjoy it !!!!! CHEERS.........BOB

Hello,
Our 11-year-old son saw this and wanted it so badly. I just wonder what we should have expected to pay for something like this. Thank you for any help.

Here was the description from the seller:

This is a nice large amethyst crystal cluster with gold and black cacoxenite crystal inclusions, hematite inclusions and many large, deep purple crystals collected from Uruguay. This piece has wonderful large crystals with good clarity and beautiful color. This specimen has a beautiful shape and is 100 % all natural, and has not been colored, cut or polished that makes it very unique. There are several crystals on this specimen that measures over 1 inch in diameter and many others that are just under that size. You just dont find too many clusters with large crystals like this anymore. We stumbled across some old stock that was wrapped in newspaper and still packed in sawdust and from many years ago in a warehouse. This specimen weighs in at 15 pounds 9.8 ounces and measures about 13 3/4 x 10 3/4 x 3 inches thick. This large cabinet specimen displays very well and makes a wonderful addition to any collection or a fantastic gift for that crystal enthusiast.

The value of the specimen depends on how dark the amethyst is. Can you supply a picture?
