I recently acquired a native arsenic specimen that retains several old dealer labels with it. The specimen looks EXACTLY like a classic Japanese native arsenic specimen - a somewhat spikey-looking ball of interpenetrant crystals. My question is this - has anyone ever seen similar specimens from Germany? I have seen some massive, botryoidal arsenic specimens with some areas of crude crystallization before but never a ball of well defined crystals....

Recently in Wisconsin several large glacial erratic boulders have turned up having plagioclase crystals as big as an adult head. I include several photos. I'm curious as to their source. Some bedrock sources are known further south in central Wisconsin, which I have worked on, and I think there was a swarm on these intruded about 1.4 billion years ago. If anyone has found similar boulders in gravel pits in the upper Midwest USA, I'd like to hear about it and their locations. I might be able to trace the boulder source up-glacier if I have enough reports. Also if anyone knows of a bedrock source in northern Wisconsin or Michigan's UP, I'd appreciate hearing of it. Lastly if anyone knows of similar bodies elsewhere in the world with some literature on their formation, please direct me! Thanks

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in the Otamo Siikainen locality? I live 10km from this dolomite quarry and collect there a lot and publish photo's from the site. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/finnchaga/sets/72157632821144102/)

I have exchanged emails with the "locality experts" F. Sandström and M. Kurhila, both of who are unfortunately not anymore actively concerned with this locality, as I understand. I'm aiming at bringing the Otamo locality up-to-date as to species found and photos as well.

Currently, there are perhaps 2-3 minerals not published for the locality; one is galena as a certainty and some other of my samples are currently awaiting 2nd analysis by the Geological Survey of Finland. Another suspected species in sphalerite, I'll be posting an analysis help request for this mineral.

Please let me know if anyone is interested in discussing this locality, exchanging ideas, photos etc. An organized trip there is scheduled for June 15th and the contact person for booking is Pekka Ruoho. I myself am currently arranging the specifics for safety & rules during the visit.

Exactly 50 years ago, on 11 May 1963, the very first meeting of the MKA (Mineralogische Kring Antwerpen) took place in Antwerp.
After more than 1000 (!!!) meetings and various other activities, it is still alive and kicking, I would say more than ever (with around 400 members, about 250 pages of Geonieuws magazine yearly, its splendid website (www.minerant.org), numerous presentations and other activities, the yearly mineral show Minerant, its huge library and interesting exhibitions) !
Special congratulations to Paul Tambuyser and Paul Van hee, the only actual MKA-members who were present from that very first meeting.

Two stories in the news related to minerals, both of which come across as a bit dubious.

The first is the discovery by archeologists of "mysterious orbs" in a temple in Mexico. A photo of the "orbs" is about 1/3 of the way down the page. Possibly an ancient Mexican's collection of pyrite concretions?

[gizmodo.com]

Second is the announcement of the discovery of the "first" fragments from the Tunguska explosion in Siberia (1908). These were collected from a stream 20 some years ago and, despite the claims, look more like ironstone concretions:

Following up on a thread from 2 years ago AMT sites that did not make the list.

1. To the gentleman that was concerned that the Au and Te from Cripple Creek did not make it.
Actually it did, they made Colorado Gold as statewide inclusive(AMT #29 as it appears in the book.
As for his comment that Cripple Creek is more prominent than Twin Creeks NV (AMT #37) and
Eden Mills (AMT #6), I think not, Of a Carlin-type Gold deposit #37 is the best. And as a skarn deposit
#6 is our Jefferies Quarry.
2. About those snarky comments from Justin with absolutely no vowels in his last name, we all have our
"why this did not make it". We all have our favorites that did not make it.
Here's mine:
1. Spruce Pine District (Was listed as an amethyst locality on the voting list, amethyst is the only thing not found there)
2. Hallalulah Jct. (my opinion beats the snot out of Denny Mtn)
3. Colorado Rhodochrosites inclusive (like they did for Southern CA pegmatites).
4. New Jersey Basalt Traps
5. The William Wise Mine New Hampshire

These are mine, I would love to get imput on all your favorites .
As for the borates of California, I conversed with Janet Clifford (co-author of the Red Beryl (AMT #27) and
Golden Beryl (AMT #32).
THEY MELT!
It's hard to be a "treasure" when it melts when it gets wet.
I will query that Scovil dude about that at the CMS show later today about that

3. I should state for the record that that not only was there was limited space in the book, also the venue had problems with showcase space and their still trying to cram the DVD down to something reasonable.
Still the AMT project was a monumental endeavor that will never be repeated, and all those involved are to be commended.

Yes, it's that time again when I need to ask you to put your hands in your pocket to help support the site.

There are many good ways to do this, but the easiest are sponsoring pages - [www.mindat.org] or just simply making a donation - [www.mindat.org]
Every little helps. Thank you!

I was just reading the definition of chalcedony on the Mindat page for chalcedony. I am not sure I agree with all the definition and wanted to get a more broad perspective.

I know chalcedony is not a valid mineral species, but it seems to me we could have a better definition.

Any thoughts?

I think it wqould be a waste if I got the opportunity to explore and search for mionerals in such an exotic place. I also need to look up any regulations on what I cant and can not bring home on the boat and plane. Im sure as long as it lisnt a plant or animal I would be ok..

Kidd & Haycock (1935); Rocks & Min.: 21:207.; B. J. Kieller (1965) Mineralogy of the No. 2 Zone Eldorado Mine, Port Radium Northwest Territories. Bulletin of Canadian Petroleum Geology 13:452

?? I can't find it in any Canadian university library catalogue (most only have issues of the journal from the 1950s onward). Second best would be information on where to get that particular issue.
