Hello all,
Does anyone know the origin of manebach twins in feldspars?
Carlsbad twins were first described from Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad), Bohemia, Czech Rep. Baveno twins from Baveno, Italy.
What about manebach twins? Is the word manebach a locality, a latin translation...?
Thanks,

I have a Radalert 100 Geiger Counter. It's a digital readout. This company touts that their Geiger counters are more accurate than the CDV-700 models. From what I have observed from various internet sights and even postings here on Mindat, the CDV-700 always seem to have an outrageously high count compared to the newer models such as this digital one. What gives?

Hi everyone,

I have a question for you. This is the best mineral site for collectors but there is only one thing that would be nice. A section for specific minerals that collectors are looking for that are hard to find. With the thousand of users on the web there is a wealth of knowledge of where to acquire a specimen. I’m looking for a mineral from a specific location but with goggling and surfing I can check out only a small percent of the web. Someone out there might have come across it at one time. Collectors helping collectors find specimens. This would be an info topic, not a selling page. That is what the auction is for. I know there are pros and cons about this. What do you think?

Thanks, Keith

It seems to me that there needs to be some clearly established guidelines for locality descriptions. RE: the thread 2XSunrise Dam
I am in agreement with Alfredo in that : Putting "nearest town" can cause serious confusion when the nearest town happens to be across the boundary in a different shire/county/state. Several such cases have already cropped up in other countries. Unless a mine is located on land politically controlled by a town, it might be best to put "x km SSW of Abcd Town" in the description box and leave the town name out of the geographic heirarchy string.
However this will require some rearranging at localities such as Cobalt and Bancroft, Ontario and I am sure numerous other places.
An alternate approach could be the nearest town with emphasis on coordinates. Example: Canada, Ontario, Wilberforce, Cardiff Mine, xxxN, xxxW. That way one doesn't have to worry about geographic boundaries. If the coordinates are not known then the title would simply be country, district or province, nearest town, mine, ?N, ?W. Eliminating as many geographic boundaries as possible would greatly simplify things and avoid many of the problems associated with changes in boundaries over time. Using coordinates would also be far more accurate than any other method. With access to google earth and other databases there is really no reason why coordinates cannot be found that are likely to be just as, if not more accurate than geographic names. If you know it is "x km SSW from Abcd Town" then you can also find the coordinates.

Some time back, we formed such a group consisting of members from Canada, the USA and Norway. It is a fact that the Aris quarry has some minerals new to mineralogy, some of which have been studied and recently written up. We also found that we had quite a few unknown minerals. This message is our effort to reach out to other collectors who would be willing to pool information, photos, etc about Aris minerals. One of our goals is to formulate an accurate list of Aris minerals. If you are interested, please contact me on this forum of by a PM.

Hello all,

According to your experiences and knowledges, what will be the definition of a "world class mineral"?

When i am talking about, i am not talking about one specimen like a museum specimen but much more like a find of one mineral somewhere that can be consider like a world class mineral.

I only have one example in mind, the famous dolomite from Eugui in Spain because of the size, the clearness and the architecture of many specimens.

I need help on identifying an unknown substance.

I recently purchased some pyrite beads from China. Roughly 100 strands of different sizes and shapes with many of them having small pockets or vugs. Many of the pockets were coated or filled with a mercury-like metallic substance on the beads along with a white powder. I have played with and handled a lot of mercury over the years, so I am well acquainted with it. The white powder is apparently either aluminum oxide or talc used in polishing the beads.

I assumed the mercury was used as part of the polishing process.

I sent them back and the manufacture had them tested at a lab in Hong Kong. They tested them by atomic absorption and said there was absolutely no mercury on the beads. The amount of samples test was high, several hundred from a one ton pallet of beads.

My question is what compound did I confuse as liquid mercury on the beads?

I'm very sad to announce that Arthur E. Smith of Houston, Texas passed away this evening of complications due to cancer. Almost everybody in the field of Geology and Mineralogy knew Art, or at the very least, knew of him. He was active in his chosen field right up to the day he was admitted to the Hospital, more than two weeks ago. I was proud to have known Art as a colleague and to have been able to call him my friend. He was always willing to take the time to show a greenhorn the ropes, even if it meant having to show them more than once. Art was always willing to share equally with others the credit for discoveries that would not have seen the light of day without his lopsided efforts and his amazing powers of observation. Art was the first person I ever met that had a mineral named in his honor (artsmithite).

Art's amazing mineral collection is world-class but his Texas Locality Index is still the most comprehensive compilation of its type in the State of Texas and will probably be his legacy. Many weekend "rock lickers" just like me caught the fever by reading his detailed descriptions of the salt domes, pegmatites, deserts, piney woods, coastal flats and prairie grasslands that defined the mineral collecting sites in Texas. It was always a work in progress and no rockshop, University Geology library or collector's backpack was complete without a copy. I can look across my desk right now and see my own mud-stained, dog-eared copy peeking through the flap of my backpack, waiting to go back out into the field.

I'm going to miss you, buddy. I will always cherish the memory of what turned out to be our only collecting trip together into the Llano Uplift of Texas during a fortuitous period of remission in Art's illness.

For those of you in the Houston area, and those who feel like making the trip, there will be a memorial service at 2 PM on Monday, November 16th at the Southwest Calvary Baptist Church, 12910 W Bellfort Ave, Houston, TX.

My formal review of the DVD will appear in the Mineralogical Record, but let me say that I definitely recommend the DVD to anyone with an interest in either (a) thumbnail specimens or (b) learning about aesthetics in mineral collecting.
Thanks,

Best minerals has a new navigation tool located at the top of the Best Minerals-General forum. It lists in alphabetical order all of the minerals where the first draft of their articles have been more or less completed. Some few of them still have a little construction work to be done on them. Each mineral is linked to the article. Just click on the mineral of interest to you and you will be taken to that article.

The first draft of the article on wulfenite is under active construction, and if you have any knowledge of wulfenites or their localities and or stories about them, now would be the time to add your comments to the wulfenite forum.

I was looking at Larry's Mineral Trading List website, and had a blast reading through people's specialties. It's amazing how many there are! When I started collecting, I decided that hey, I'm from Arizona and copper is a big thing here.. Why don't I collect Arizona copper minerals? Little did I know how collectible they are!!! So with as much detail as you'd like, I'd love to hear about people's "specialties."

My specialty: I love Arizona minerals, especially copper-leads, pieces with historical significance, and rare Tiger pieces.

Please share! It's enlightening to see what people really go for. Then maybe we can tally them up and see what's really popular.. And who's really weird! :)

Last evening an individual showed me a picture of a specimen that he had purchased in Quilin, China. He said that this specimen was either a fluorite or a apatite group mineral with some rare earth elements in the structure. The curious thing about this specimen, is that it glows in the dark after being subjected to either incandescent light or sunlight. In fact, he said that as the specimen is exposed to the light it starts to glow very quickly and continues to glow for quite some time. Does anyone know anything about these specimens? A quick google search mentions that Europium can cause luminescence in fluorite.

Any other information would be of interest.
I am fairly new to the Mindat and I am not sure if I can post photos of specimens from museum exhibits. I have seen some photos here from museum collections (looking homemade not professional..through the glass etc.). Are they posted by museum staff or with permission? Or just visitors with cameras? So, is it possible to post a photo - made with permission from museum (e.g. our Czech National Museum allows You for 50 CZK = 2 Euros take a photo without flash and stative)? What is mindat opinion?

Label question:

AA 469 xx- Backside of an aragonite specimen from Spania Dolina (?).
It is collected before 1870 (pre-previous owner died that year)- but my question is WHAT do the numbers stand for. (137/ 40484/ 280 )?
One could be a price, one “size/weight” and the third…..
I would especially appreciate if anyone has any knowledge of this kind of label. Slovakian/ Czech experts!!
469 show of course the 2 crystals (left is damaged)- roughly 30 mm tall
