NORTHERN CALIFORNIA MINERALOGICAL ASSOCIATION
4620 Doe Street
Shingle Springs, CA 95682

Hello Everyone,

It’s that time again to gather together at the 2013 NCMA annual micromount conference!

Registration materials for the conference are included in this message. Pre-registration is $15 per person and on-site registration will be $20 per person. You can also use the attached form to pay your 2013-2014 membership dues that are $10 for a single membership and $15 for a couple’s membership.

The conference will be held May 31 through June 2 at the El Dorado Community Hall (6139 Pleasant Valley Road) in El Dorado, California. El Dorado is located about 40 miles East of Sacramento on Highway 50. From either direction on Highway 50, take the Missouri Flat Road exit south to Highway 49. Turn right on Highway 49. At the junction of Highway 49 and Pleasant Valley Road, take Pleasant Valley Road. The Community Hall is about ¼ mile beyond the junction. Turn right on Oriental (directly across from the Post Office) to get to the Community Hall.

There will be no meals served at the conference. However, allocated time in the schedule has been provided for everyone to take advantage of nearby restaurants. A social hour will be held on Friday and Saturday afternoons, so bring your favorite finger-food to share.

Tim Rose, again, has lined up some terrific speakers for your enjoyment. The scheduled talks this year are as follows:

Friday evening, May 31 at 7:00 pm
Don Howard – “What’s Old in Minerals”

Saturday morning, June 1 at 10:00 am
Ted Hadley – “Maps and Navigating on a Budget, or …. Materials and methods for managing a library of topographic maps, annotating them, using them for navigation, and paperless portability with minimal cost investment”

Sunday morning, June 2 at 10:00 am
Tim Rose – “The San Rafael Mine, Nye County, Nevada”

Attendees should feel free to bring slides they’d like to show on Friday night following Don’s presentation. Last year for the first time, a silent auction was held that turned out to be a success.

We would like to encourage you to bring mineral-related items for this year’s silent auction.

Motel reservations should be made early; gather up some egg cartons or flats of material to keep the give-away tables well stocked for the weekend (as well as a few choice specimens for the live action on Saturday evening); and make your plans to attend. Hope to see you in El Dorado!!

I am seriously out of love with my mobile phone. Hasn't yet ended in a permanent separation but she stays dead in a drawer all except for one or two days a quarter. When I was in business, love it or not, the thing was a 'must' but since retirement..... it's just another way to spend money on services that I no longer require.

However, I can see the attraction of the bar coding idea - if you really can squish all the info you need to record into a bar code, it'd be a neat way to go. But I couldn't do that. If and when my records are ever completed (and that's a very big if), each record will run to over 100 words/numbers, with numerous logical and mathematical operators embedded and with hyperlinking to databases of images, graphs and the collection index.. This makes the collected records very much the focus of my collection's organisation, even to driving the system of physical storage of specimens. However, it's not the records that I spend quiet evenings with, admiring yet once more and never tiring......

Steve, interesting idea. I am pretty certain that the QR code could be made to fit in or on a standard micromount box, also. But my one concern is how long this technology will persist. I use paper liners inside a black box with my label glued to the bottom of the box. And a second label placed on the bottom of the liner, face down. The second label is my insurance against the first one dropping off or becoming defaced. I could get more info on a QR label. Worth considering. Thanks

I have started to keep a "QR" code on the base of my perky boxes. The QR Code is the funny barcode that can be printed out and scanned with a smartphone. You can put lots of information in it, including collection details, links to MINDAT location info, etc.. It can then be printed onto a label and cut to fit the bottom of the perky box.

I wrote it up back in December of 2011 for our club, if you need details. [rockyreader.com]

Really, for those who know about the QR codes with their smartphone, it should be straight forward.

Enjoy,

Hi Donald,

Julian Gray at the Tellus Museum came up with a simple idea that works great. He cut the top off an old microscope stand that had a micrometer stage on it. As a petrographer, it made me shudder to think about doing this, but there are many, many old scrap stands around . I bought a cheap one off eBay, sawed the top off so it fit my bellows stand and mounted a new, homemade, stage on it. Works great and takes only 2-5 minutes to produce stacks of 20-50 images. I used to visually crank the focus on my binocular scope and got OK results doing that, but the micrometer stage produces superior results and is a lot easier to do.

The real key is finding lenses that are suitable for this sort of work. I have a number of old B&L microscope objective lenses salvaged from my junk box, and a newer, Chinese 4X objective, that give superior images (all simple achromats). They are almost free from coma, have reasonable working distances and give sharp, color saturated photos. The higher end stuff like Canon, Nikon and Leitz make is superior to these, but about 3 orders of magnitude more expensive!

Henry, that is a great image. I just downloaded Combine Z, but have not yet used it. I intend mating my camera (it is a simple digital) to my microscope. I don't have anything but a manual focus, so getting stacked images will take some careful changing of the focal plane, I think. Does any one have suggestions?

As commented by the earlier contributors to this thread, how one organizes the storage of their collection is driven by personal priorities. I belong to the camp that places the greatest importance on efficiency of storage. For me, this means one size drawer for micros, one for TN’s, others for miniatures, small cabinets, cabinets. Within a drawer, specimens are stored in numerical catalog order. Having some woodworking tools and skills, when I need a new TN drawer, for example, I build another one, (although I usually build drawers in batches, trying to anticipate future needs). A collection stored this way avoids maintaining many partially filled drawers for prolonged periods.
Numerically ordered storage by size dictates the need for a collection catalog that maintains an entry for size: I use uM, TN, MN, SC and CB. With the specimen numerical range on each drawer front, specimen location is easy.
This discussion also includes the associated topic of the specimen catalog. The catalog software of my choice has yet to be mentioned, so I will give it a plug: Handbase by DDH Software. This data base program is designed to run both on a Windows desktop/laptop PC and on your iPad, iTouch, iPhone. This data base can be examined, sorted, or edited from either platform, and synchronized with the other platform when desired. You have full freedom to custom design your database fields and their presentation views. The biggest plus of this database is that I can carry my collection catalog in my shirt pocket! I can take it with me to a mineral show and get a quick answer to “Do I have a Fletcher Mine phosphoferrite?” or “How many Wise Mine fluorites do I have, when did I buy them, and what did I pay for them?”

ps: Yes, for you EXCEL folks, you can import your EXCEL database into Handbase.
