Hi,

I attended the NYC Gem and Mineral Show (November 7-8) yesterday. It was a pretty busy affair with me as I joined the NY Mineralogical Club and spoke with many of the dealers. I learned an awful lot from my excursion. I met with fellow New Yorkers, John Betts of John Betts Fine Minerals, and Anthony (Tony) Nikischer, President of Excalibur Mineral Corporation. Excalibur hosted the show. This guy's got a mineral named after him. :) I especially liked Tony's forthrightness and candor when he was answering all my queries. He really gave me the time of day, and I really appreciate that Tony!

I purchased two specimens that are of excellent quality and representative of the species: a Rutile on hematite matrix, locality: Novo Horizonte Bahia, Brasil. The XLS are extremely well formed, with rutile lighting bolt-like projections jutting out from the center of the hematite matrix. The crystals are doubly terminated going straight through the middle of the hematite matrix.

Second specimen is an excellent native copper from Ajo, Pima Co., Arizona on an earthy like calcite matrix. What sold me on this specimen is that it is not a floater, which is pretty typical of native coppers. The vertical striations also caught my eye. I also like the fact that this native copper formed at a time when the Oxygen content in the Earth's atmosphere was low, and, as such, did not oxidize. It will stay that beautiful copper color!

I particularly like thumbnails that are on matrix. Hence, why I opted out of a cavansite and dioptase thumbnail floaters. Nevertheless, they were excellent specimens as well.

I unfortunately lack an essential piece of equipment: a camera. :) When I get one I shall surely upload the images of my new minerals to my album.

So, it wasn't a huge show, but was my first one, and a truly enlightening experience. I made new friends, and saw some wonderful thumbnails. There were a LOT of thumbnails at the show. Took me nearly four hours to finalize on a purchase. I learned a lot at the show. Thank you Tony for taking the time to expand my mineral horizons!

Best regards,

Hi all,

The 2009 Zeehan Mineral fair (Tasmania) was held this weekend, I went yesterday (Saturday) to have a look at new Tassie and other minerals but also to catchup with the fairly small group of mineral collectors etc from our State.

The weather was fantastic, two warm\hot days with blue sky's, yep that was the yearly allocation of fine weather, so back to rain and drizzle for the next 362 days for the West coasters.

Saturday had the best attendance for the last few years, really good news, however the fact a number of the mines are now in care and maintenance, the amount of local minerals was down in number and lacking variety.

Anyway I took a couple of photos so in a few days I will do a bigger article on the show.

Howdy all,

My girlfriend and I are planning on heading down to the Arizona State Fair tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 17th.) Bob Dylan is playing! Yeah! And also, of course, it's in Phoenix and they have a mineral display - I'm hoping to see some good ones. Also hoping I'll run into someone from the Mindat community! Would be nice to get to know some you folks. I imagine we'll all have a good chance to meet in Tucson in a few months, but in the mean time, if there's minerals AND Bob Dylan for $10, sign me up for that!

So if anyone will be there look for a young guy with a mustache looking for all the Arizona rocks! I'll bring my camera, too, so if anyone is interested I'll try to post some pictures!

Looking forward to a nice warm day in Phoenix! (Supposed to be 101 tomorrow! In October! Yay!

While we were in Freiberg a couple of days ago, we saw a poster for a show in Dresden, so we went there. There were over a hundred dealers, perhaps a dozen with higher end minerals - including silver minerals from Saxony. I was tempted to repatriate a Camsell River Silver, a Chibougamou Cubanite and a Serandite from MSH, all reasonably priced - but, alas we still must pay for hotels, food and "Schwarzes" for another week. I did buy a few nice toenails of Freiberg and Pribram minerals. I will post a few pictures once I get them organized.
ps - Terra Mineralia in Freiberg is incredible - there must be many best of species. Imagine a stibnite 3 feet wide with a hundred +/- footlongs!
