Can you help make this a better article? What good localities have we missed? Can you supply pictures of better specimens than those we show here? Can you give us more and better information about the specimens from these localities? Can you supply better geological or historical information on these localities? This is a stub of an article to act as a place holder where people can contribute interesting facts about dendrites and bring to our attention good images of dendrites from various localities.

Black dendritic films of various visually indistinguishable black manganese oxides, may consist of Birnessite, Coronadite, Cryptomelane, Hollandite, Romanèchite, Todorokite or other species. Many manganese minerals have similar strong x-ray lines and line-broadening can make x-ray diffraction identification ineffectual. Potter and Rossman (1979) have found that infra-red spectroscopy has been helpful in verifying some dendrite mineralogy. Currently, there are no known manganese dendrites in the world which contain pyrolusite.
Most of the images below are of Dravite crystals that have not been analyzed but are called that because that was what was on their existing labels or because they had similarities to a few Dravites that had been analyzed from those particular localities. Before the advent of modern analytic equipment and methods, Dravite tourmaline crystals were mostly thought to be dravite because they were brown. However from the examples below you can see that the colors of this tourmaline variety can range from black, brown, amber to green in color. Mindat currently has (January 2013) 500 localities listed for Dravite so it is not a particularly rare mineral. The Hand Book of Mineralogy says crystals of 20 cm exist, though almost certainly larger ones are out there waiting to be found if they have not already been found.
I must admit I spaced right past your existing article, and that will be just fine for adding some or most of the images to the best minerals article. I don't have the time right now and may not have the time till the end of September. A death in the family will require my presence in Illinois. In addition I need to give a lecture in Texas, visit some quartz mines in Arkansas and the Denver Gem and Mineral show will require most of my time. But it will eventually get done.

Hi Rock

Adobe reader - which is free - allows you to take a snapshot of any section of the document and paste it into another document such as a word file, or straight into MS Paint. You can then save it as a JPEG file. The trick I found is to zoom in on the document, then select the area to be copied and it will save at a higher resolution. I'll upload the map pictures this week for you anyway.

Hi Rock

Just thought I could give you an update on the Billeroo prospect and the Radium Hill mines. I have uploaded an article here on mindat about the Billeroo prospect that covers the history, geology, mode of formation, etc. Billeroo Article or there is a PDF version of my article on the Broken Hill Mineral Club website Broken Hill Mineral Club which has location maps included.

The Radium Hill mine is best described in two South Australian Geological Survey publications - Bulletin 30 - Uranium Deposits in South Australia (1954) by Dickenson and Sprigg and - Bulletin 34 - Regional Geology and Mineral Resources of the Olary Province (1958) by Campana and King. I don't know whether you can get access to either of these. I bought my copies via the web booksellers.

I'm hoping to go down to Plumbago over the last weekend of September.
Therefore I think it is untimely to promote me to the upper level, or at least it would be worth do be done but I do not promise to feed the databank as generously as I imagine I will do within two years.
Thanks for the pictures. Just to let you know we can not use them unless they are first uploaded to the mindat gallery. Do you know how to do that? If you would like to do that, let me know and I will raise you to a level one and give you a link to the instructions on how to upload images to the mindat gallery. We don't show any images in Best Minerals unless they have first been uploaded to the mindat gallery. When you upload the images you will choose between several different flavors of copyright protection. Also, we rarely show pictures in Best Minerals other than images of the entire specimen, although if there are interesting features on the specimen we will sometimes show the full picture and next to it, a close up of the interesting part. Your pictures are pretty good and I would imagine that at least one or two of them would be included in the article. However, the person who writes the Best Mineral article about a particular country has the authority to choose what ever images they wish to put in the article. Thats about all the reward they get other than their name on the article for doing the large amount of work involved.

This mine produced outstanding dolomites. Ask Roger Lang for an appropriate photo.
There are two more German localities that merit to be included in a best-of-species list:

(1) Grevenbrück: [www.mindat.org]
(2) Rammelsbach: [www.mindat.org]

Both produced dolomite pseudomorphs after calcite. I'm not familiar with the situation at Grevenbrück, but Rammelsbach produced plates to several tens of centimeters with pseudomorphs to more than 10 cm in size. When they were first discovered, they were abundant, but the productive zone is now quarried away. Large specimens were often rather boring, though, because of the uniform crystallization and lack of associated minerals. I will try to contribute a picture.

Dolomite is a common rock forming mineral in sedimentary and metamorphic (marble) rocks. It is also formed in hydrothermal veins, magnesium rich altered igneous rocks and rarely in pegmatites. Many million tons of fine grained dolomite are quarried each year for use as aggregate.

The mineral forms large rhombohedral crystals, some steep rhombohedrons forming prisms and rarely as tabular crystals. Dolomite is most commonly available as drusy coatings of small crystals forming the matrix for sedimentary specimens of sulfides and fluorite. Good crystals of dolomite are relatively rare. Although they are not as large as other specimens the color of cobaltain dolomite makes specimens from Morocco and Congo very popular with collectors. Dolomite is a relatively common mineral pseudomorphing other carbonates (especially calcite) and forming fine grained coatings on other minerals. Another desirable habit is the saddle shaped crystals (deformed, offset rhombohedrons).
To learn more about the Schneeberg occurrence, you should send a PM to Steffen Michalski. If anyone can help you, it is probably him.

Hi Rock,
Unfortunately i forgot to tick the follow topic box so i did not see your response earlier .. just as martin posted i noticed the reply.
so done...

Hey Martin,
nice you stopped by. I have all this info from my colleague Dr. Haneke who knew your uncle and did geological mapping with him. I found the story of the Dreyerite discovery very interesting, we keep all the original documentary material that Jost Haneke kept at the Pfälzisches Bergbaumuseum. If you want to know more please leave me a PM. We presented all this info in a poster display at the museum some years ago. Glad you like it!

Cheers
