Rock, I changed my mind, and I just I did do a bit of editing on two of the Limites Calcite pics. You were right, they're better now.

Thanks for the advice. I've got several photo edit programs, and I often adjust the dynamic range of my photos.
In this case I'd rather leave the photo as it is, because it's much more true to the pitch black specimen. ;-)

Harjo,
Some of the calcites from Limites look pretty dark. I copied one of them into photoshop and lightened up the shadows a little. I don't know if the one you uploaded to mindat looks better of the one included here that I lightned up looks better. If this one looks better, you might consider lightening the shadows some in some of the other images and uploading them again. I think this is called called increasing the dynamic range of images. In a basic photoshope program it is very quick and easy to accomplish.

There are several more MUST for calcite from the eastern part of Austria.
One is a spectacular specimen of pink calcite from the Mannersdorf quarry I saw recently at an exhibition (http://www.mindat.org/loc-21378.html).
Unfortunately I don`t have a pic or a collectors name but I`m quite sure others have as its a well known specimen.

Then the large xtls (also excellent twins) on dolomite from Forchtenau [www.mindat.org] come in my mind.
I have huge specimen with way over 50kg weight in my cellar, but covered by 30 years of dust - so no good pic possible.

Then I remember the also huge xtls from Rohrbach near Ternitz (locality not present here on mindat yet) that I collected in my youth. Similiar but not so large xtls were found in Gumpoldskirchen [www.mindat.org].

You seem to me to have a hundred hours working day. In the Austrian part about Calcites I see that the definitely best Calcite locality in Austria is still missing: It is Bad Bleiberg again where most wonderful specimens of Calcite in many different habits were collected. You probably find some specimens in my homepage that you will like.
Here will go a good picture of a calcite specimen from Austria and general remarks about the calcite from this country. Here are some url's to some of the better Austrian calcite specimens here on Mindat that can be considered for inclusion in the article. These, in most cases are just for temporary use until we can get images of the much better specimens that are almost certainly out there. We should also consider that there are probably localities out there with fine specimens that are not even mentioned on Mindat. Also in some instances there are sometimes pictures on Mindat, of specimens from a locality, but they were so ratty that I did not include them here, but there may also be really good specimens from there that we should talk about in this article.
As Calcite is found in most geologic settings it can be come across almost everywhere in Austria.
But there are currently only 127 Austrian localities listed in mindat due to the fact that in most
occurences the crystals are rather small and insignificant. Big and spectacular Calcite specimens have been
rescued in numerous alpine clefts, the Pb - Zn mines of the Bleiberg area, the iron - manganese mines
of Hüttenberg, the ancient silver mine of Oberzeiring, in several limestone outcrops like the "Krallaloch" at Götzis,
dolomite quarries like the Bundesstrombauamt quarry at Bad Deutsch- Altenburg.
To say where Austria's most aesthetic Calcites have been collected is a matter of personal taste. I have a preference
for those from the Pb-Zn mines of the Bleiberg district, the brilliant crystals found in some alpine clefts in the
Glocknerwand at Kals and the wonderful specimens from the huge cleft in Mitteldorferbachgraben at Virgen in East
Tyrol.
Ancient iron and manganese mining area ('Erzberg' = ore mountain). Located south to east of Hüttenberg and west to north of Lölling.
Synsedimentary siderite ores (Mn-bearing; fresh to completely weathered) and Alpidic hydrothermal baryte layers and veins with sulphidic ore mineralisations (Pb-Cu-Sb-S).
Mining stopped in 1978. Now it is used as a tourist mine.
No bigger crystals are reported from this location. The Calcites occur in beautiful paragenesis with Chalcedony, Siderite, Pyrite.
The ancient Pb-Zn mines of the Bleiberg area which had to be closed in 1993 because of falling prizes for lead and zinc produced over 50 different minerals with some of them in excellent quality. Best known minerals from there are: Wulfenite (Bleiberg is the type-locality), Hemimorphite, Cerussite, and Calcite in many different forms and habits. The most common form of the Calcite crystals measuring up to 16cm is the scalenohedral type that mainly was found in Antoni Mine and Max Mine.
Most attractive are the sometimes water clear prismatic crystals (Kanonenspat) from Stefanie Mine. But as there were not many excellent specimens rescued these brilliant crystals can only be seen in a few local collections.
In 1982 a huge cleft which contained more than 2 tons of Rock Crystals was opened on the south slope of Grauleitenspitze in the Ankogel group. Several teams worked the cleft which also produced nice Calcite twins in sizes up to 12cm and some one off specimens with Calcite crystals perched on Rock Crystals. As the cleft was right beside a path and so could be reached very easily each team working there only stayed as long as they were able to guard the cleft over night. As soon as they got tired and left the cleft the next team went in and rescued crystals as long as they could. For over three months this certainly was one of the busiest places in the Austrian Alps.
Both specimens were recovered by the legendary Carinthian Strahler Sebastian Brandstetter who climbed the steepest rocks without using modern climbing equipment. Sometimes he even took off his shoes to get a better grip. In the 1960's he found outstanding Smoky Quartzes, Amethysts, Fluorites, Titanites and Calcites in the areas around Heiligenblut and Mallnitz.
Ancient Pb-Zn mine, working a deposit of synsedimentary origin in scheelite-bearing rocks of the Habach formation. In the veins, fluorite alternates with sphalerite and other sulphides. The latter however, are also found in quartzite. Another mine on the Flecktrog Alp ('Flecktrogalm'), at a distance of 300 m, was working the same deposit (see separate locality entry). Most of the minerals reported from these localities were poorly crystallized.
Clefts in epidote-amphibolites of the so-called Knappenwandmulde series. The well known mineralization with outstanding epidote crystals is restricted to places where these clefts intersect with an aplite vein. The locality owes its discovery in 1865 to prospection works in search of copper ores, which occur at several places both at the Knappenwand and in its vicinity. Rarely, fine bornite crystals occur in association with epidote. The deposit was intermittently worked for epidote until 1956. Later, specimens were recovered during a scientific project guided by staff from the National History Museum of Vienna.
Presently (2007), the site is leased by the Zukunftkollegium Neukirchen and mined for specimens.
Famous Fluorite locality which also produced Calcite crystals.
The area around Weißeck mountain is dominated by dolomites and limestones of the Radstadt formation. They occupy an area that is elliptical in plan view, about 3.5 km long and up to 1.5 km wide, with Weißeck mountain located a little south of its center. Fluorite is found in outcrops and loose boulders in numerous places on the slopes, either in clefts or in quartz veins. These occurrences have been known since the late 18th century.
Located on the ridge between the Murwinkel and the upper Zederhaus valley.
Magnesite deposit, worked by opencut mines. In the past, the deposit was also worked for talc.
Located NW of Bruck an der Mur. Well known mineral locality because of its excellent Strontianite crystals.

Comprises the districts/mines Angerer, Kaintaleck and Wiesergut (Wieser) (all separate (sub-)localities).
Located in 1852, magnesite mining started in 1870, in 1906 the industrial production of magnesite products started. In 1911 the first furnace was built in Oberdorf. Now the Styromag Company operates one surface mine (Kaintalegg at N47.44602 E15.09434) and two underground mines (Angerer at N47.45696 E15.11423 und Wiesergut at N47.45778 E15.11683).
The furnaces are still in Oberdorf (parish St. Katharein an der Laming).
From 1945 – 1963 the Wiesergut-mine was also used for the production of talc.
We do not appear to have Gallitin Canyon as a locality and quite frankly I have no idea where this might be. Can you equate it with a locality string on mindat? If not you may want to enter that locality into our database and then upload the image to our gallery. It is certainly good enough for the Best Mineral article on USA Calcites.

This is a fine Gallitin Canyon calcite specimen. It is nearly a floater, I can find only two 1-cm points of attachment from what must have been a large pocket with branching, lobular matrices in it, covered with tiny calcites. On top of those grew the large golden scalenohedrons. The largest calcite is 7.5 cm (3 inches) and is doubly terminated. All the large scalenohedrons are undamaged. The overall size of this grand specimen is 17 X 10 X 6 cm. The specimen was passed from Ronald L. Anderson of Littleton, CO to the Buckskin Booksellers of Ouray, CO.

This is one of my favorite Belgian calcites, an absolutely exquisite, perfect scalenohedral twin. There's a clean twinning line down the middle of this wonderful specimen. The crystal itself is 5 X 2.5 X 2.5 cm and sits on a small bit of calcite matrix. In the back there is a smaller rhomb attached, making the specimen about 3 cm wide. The ends show preferential dark etching on the termination faces. This gem was collected by Armand Stilmant from the Solvay Chemical Company limestone quarry at Loverval. Obtained courtesy of Armand's friend, Jacques Legat, with Jacques' label.

Please note that after a discussion we had on the messageboard last week about the locality that this is the right locality [www.mindat.org] for this Calcite/Stibnite. So the Xikuangshan Sb deposit is right and not the Xikuangshan Mine.
Despite its great size, Canada doesn't have any outstanding and prolific calcite localities. Nonetheless, there are many localities that produce very nice calcite specimens and the occassional excellent specimen. The photos below highlight some of the better known localities or those that might be lesser known but have still produced nice specimen for which photos are available.
A lead-zinc mine located 26 km SW of Bathurst. The world's largest underground zinc mine and its fourth largest zinc producer. Owned by Brunswick Mining & Smelting Corp. Mine went to at least the 2,350 level. In the 1990s a dealer brought a small number of calcite specimens to collectors in Nova Scotia. They were very white in color and lustrous. They had a small rounded crystals surrounded by a wide flat disc (picture Saturn).
Shoreline exposures. The calcite forms in vertical fault veins and less often in isolated pods. These occur in Triassic sandstone and to a lesser degree in the overlying conglomerate. Some of the crystals reach a large size (approx 10cm+) but these are usually contacted, due to the limited space available for growth.
There are several small manganese deposits in the area around Walton. These occur in a brown shale. Generally the crystals are dogtooth scalenohedrons, brown to creamy white in color. Very steep and pointed crystals, and blocky rhombohedrons have also been found.

More attractive specimens are black due to heavy inclusions of manganese oxides. In some cases the manganese oxides (identified as groutite) have replaced the calcite in excellent pseudomorphs. Calcite twins have also been found. In addition to the Mn-oxides, the calcite is also associated with barite.
Crystals in vuggy limestone exposed on the shore of Lake Huron. The mineralized layer is often below high water level. The crystals are very complex with many faces, both flat and rounded, and also hoppered faces. Many of the crystals are twinned along the c-axis. Though they don't get large, they are very interesting to the calcite collector. At this locality, the lustrous calcite crystals are usually found in clay-filled seams while the more frosted crystals are not formed in clay. Associated minerals include sprays of strontianite and blue celestine. The locality is now inside a provincial park.
In exposures near contact of Silurian dolomitic limestone and underlying Whirlpool sandstone along the valley of the Credit River and quarries in the vicinity. There are 5 quarries that were notable for operation in the area surrounding Forks of the Credit: Big Hill Quarry, Cox Quarry, Hillis Quarry, Crowsnest Quarry, and Yorke Quarry. Most of these quarries have been long abandoned in the 1920's and are now overgrown.

In 2008, there were three pits in existence. One active and two being used for storage and processing. There have been several owners of the pits, the most recent being LaFarge Ltd. This was preceded by Steetly Industries (1951 - ?) which operated two pits fronting on Hwy 5, which was in turn was preceded by Canada Crushed Stone (1912 - 1951).
All quarries and their names reflect a continuous operation with the name changes tracking the historical progression of ownership and the several pits which were consecutively and concurrently worked.
Formerly: Mathers quarry, Saint-Eustache, Deux-Montagnes Co., Québec, Canada. Recently (2011) renamed "Carrière et pavage Saint-Eustache". This active five-level quarry has been in operation since 1961. As of 2012, it spans some 850 m in length, a width of 350 to 750 m, and a depth of roughly 50 m.

The following description is taken from the Deposit File of the MRNF (Ministère des ressources naturelles et de la faune) : The main rock type is a very fine-grained, pale medium grey siliceous dolostone, in generally thick beds and marked at places with fine clay laminae. This rock is irregularly interstratified with a dark grey, fine grained dolostone, in thin beds separated by thin interbeds of shale, and by thick beds of fine grained, medium dark grey dolostone dotted with small cavities filled with white crystalline dolomite. These strata are assigned to the Beauharnois Formation of the Beekmantown Group.
Formerly: Marcil quarry, Sainte-Clotilde-de-Chateauguay, Chateauguay Co., Québec, Canada. Operated since 1998 by Les Pavage Chenail Inc.

Operating (1980-2008) quarry in dolomitic limestone (Beekmantown formation). Superb calcite and quartz specimens were found in large cavities in the 1990s. The quarry is also known for pyrite, chalcopyrite, anatase, sphalerite, barite and some secondary copper minerals.

The about 25 quarries in the area ca. 50 km from this quarry are all in different geological formations and all of the dozen of quarries closest to Sainte-Clotilde are in Chazy shale, Potsdam sandstone and other formations.

A wide variety of calcite forms are present from this locality.
Formerly: Niobec mine, Saguenay (Chicoutimi), Le Fjord-du-Saguenay Co., Québec, Canada

In operation for more than 25 years. Located 15 kilometres northwest of Saguenay city (merged in 2002 with Chicoutimi city). Notable for large, thick prismatic barite crystals.

The Niobec orebody, which measures 600 metres by 800 metres, is situated in the southern part of the Saint-Honore carbonatite complex, which is mainly comprised of dolomitic carbonates in the centre and calcitic carbonates on the edges. This carbonatite is an oval-shaped pluton covering 12 square kilometres. The Niobec property now covers a total area of approximately 1,735 hectares, comprising two mining leases and also includes 43 claims totaling 1,605 hectares.
