On the west side of Great Salt Plains Reservoir in northwest Oklahoma, lies a flat expanse of mud approximately 3 miles wide and 7 miles long. The lake was constructed in 1941 by damming the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River. The “Salt Plains” derive their name from a thin layer of salt which covers the flats. When brine conditions are right, gypsum crystals form in the wet mud on the flats. As the crystals form, sand and clay particles are incorporated in the crystal, forming an “hourglass” shape. The reddish-brown color is due to iron oxide in the soil. Clusters, single crystals, and twins can be found. Individual crystal may reach a size of 7 inches in length and clusters have been found weighing as much as 38 pounds. Although the area is within the boundaries of the Great Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge, collectors can dig for crystals from sunrise to sunset, April 1 to October 15.

The banks of Little Beaver Creek, just west of Marlow in southwest Oklahoma, produced nice clusters of gypsum for many years. Local collectors referred to these specimens as ‘rabbit-ears’ selenite. The reddish-brown coloration of the crystals is due to inclusions of soil rich in iron oxide. Nice specimens were plentiful throughout the 60's and 70's, but the location is now defunct. Nowadays, specimens such as this are rarely seen on the market, and are only available from old collections. Many older specimens have incurred damage due to the soft nature of the mineral.

Yes, speleothems from Lechuguilla and many other caves as well should be shown in the Gypsum, USA article. When the introduction to gypsum is written, the various kinds of gypsum should be talked about and cave formations should be among them. The upside here is that gypsum is a slightly smaller sized Elephant than quartz.

About Pöttsching: This locality is an abandoned Lignite-deposite. Typical for this occurrence are bright yellow-brownish "Gypsumroses". Interessting is, that a part of the dump was burning. So you can discover burnt Gypsumand this is now a pseudomorph of a mixture of Gypsum and Bassanite. [www.mindat.org] I know Josef personally and I ask him if he can make a better photo of this specimen.

I think there is a mistake about the locality in the Ziller valley. There is definitive no occurrence of this kind of Gypsum in the Ziller valley. This specimen is typical for Pötsching or Zillingtal. In german "Zillertal" sounds like "Zillingtal". The Ziller valley, Tyrol is in the central part of the Austrian Alps and it is famous for Amethys, Haematite, Apatite, etc. in alpine clefts. Zillingtal, Burgenland is in the east of Austria. Between this two localitys are 400 km! Zillingtal is an abandoned Lignite-deposite.

All of these are under Construction except those listed in Green. Green colored entries have had at least their first drafts finished. The rest are just place holders till someone volunteers to take them in hand and bring the image and data into the article.

I think an argument that almost every country on the earth, and there about 200 of them depending on what list you choose from should have some kind of gypsum specimens. The fact that we have only these countries represented by specimen argues for a huge number of gypsum localities to be discovered or that people have just not bothered to upload specimens of gypsum from these countries. A huge country like Russia must have many good gypsum localities but we have hardly any images of gypsum crystals from there, and currently not even a single pictured gypsum specimen from Japan.
