I was interested in getting a copy of Fleischer's Glossary of Mineral Species, when I noticed that it seem to be due for another update soon. Discounts on sites like minrec.org seem to suggest that the 2008 edition is getting stale and a new one's in the works. I thought that the next edition might be for 2012, but apparently not so, according to this topic: [www.mindat.org]

Is there any word of when the next edition may be? If there'll be a 2013 print, I might as well hold off until the latest edition is released.

Hi
I don't know if you already have been able to obtain a copy of Lacroix' Mineralogie de Madagascar or not. But if not, if you're interested, I can send you a pdf copy of the pages where Lacroix discusses different varieties of chalcedony found in Madagascar. (p.216-218)

However, you will see when reading his text that he doesn't discuss the socalled "ocean jasper" or "orbicular jasper". He only mentions briefly, in a short sentence, that different varieties of chalcedony (which originates from volcanique rocks of Tertiarian age) are found abundantly in the Analalava district, especially around Marovato near Antonibe. Marovato [www.mindat.org] is the famous "orbicular jasper" locality but it was found and made famous much later, after he had written his book.

At Marovato the "Ocean jasper" does not occurs as "geodes" or amygdale fillings in a volcanique rock. It occurs as quite large boulders consisting of many horizontal, lenticular, discordant zones and layers which as been placed and formed cause to hydrothermal alteration of the Tertiary lava.
The material seen on the market has been mined from these boulders.
It consist mainly of chalcedony with finegrained green celadonite and some brownish Fe-Mn hydroxydes. And are very nice!

The best written article of the locality that i know about is Lieber, W. (2003): Sphärolithischer Chalcedon von Madagaskar. LAPIS 28 (9), 18-22

The article is "The Pegmatite Minerals of Black Mountain, Rumford, Maine" and an old friend, now deceased, had photocopied it and sent it. Unfortunately he missed getting the bottom of page 120 (also he missed telling what issue, what month, it was). The article was in 1941, volume 9, pp. 119, 120, and one other page (of which I have copy of the part, but not the page #). As having most of the information but missing some of it tends to make me wonder what was missing, I was wondering if someone has access to this, and could somehow get me a copy, making sure to get the full bottom of page 120.

You see, this are more than 10.000 pages and it takes more than 60 cm in my bookshelf.
I don't think there exists a complete pdf version of that handbook.

This is a useful reference for localities, especially old European localities. However, I have had problem in getting access to available e-books of this. I did get volume 1, part 1, also volume 2, part 2, and downloaded those, but the first only does elements and sulfides, and the latter covers the latter half of the silicates. It seems that someone, who did not look very carefully at the title pages, assumed that was all there was, and scanned those (I don't know German but I can look up key words in a German-English dictionary). (volume 1, part 1, says Erster Band, and has several groups listed, but these refer to those in volume 1, including all of its parts, whereas further down the title page it says Erste Abtheilung, Elemente und Sulfide, which I understand means Part 1, Elements and Sulfides, and the pages bear this out). There are also other parts (2,3,4, etc) to volume 1, and of course the first part of volume 2, but these seem not to be so freely available.

Mindat Books is great, and it would be a great convenience, if such a thing were practical, to get all volumes available there. Or perhaps all of those old volumes, with their parts, on a DVD or CD disk, and sold for something, such as is the great Atlas der Krystallformen disk which is done so well and is a great research bargain.

Hi

Thanks for the ref. Uwe.
The book itself is should also be considered.
It's hardbound.

It is not a mineralogical text but is still a worthwhile addition to any library and not expensive, even allowing for postage. While the on-line version is great I always prefer the touchy feely version of any book.

Cheers
