How to Contributephotos

How does one go about sending photos to Mindat? I am using an Olympus Camedia 550 digital camera. I take the photos by placing the camera against the microscope eye piece, using the highest tiff, crop the image and convert the cropped image to jpeg 98% compression.

Is there a step-by-step procedure for uploading to the site?

Folks can breathe a little easier, however, as I don't plan to choke the system with myriads of photos

Hi Rudy and everybody,

Here's a preview of the future photo guideline, currently under discussion. Feedback is wellcome.

Dominik

*** Read carefuly before uploading! ***

Images uploaded to mindat must meet the following requirements:

File format

- JPEG

Image size (pixels)

- Max 1000x700

- Min 320x240

At the chosen size, images should look sharp. Choose image size according to the true resolution of the image.

Example: a pic from a 3.3MP digicam with 2048x1536 will start to look sharp when scaled to 50% (1024x768).

File size

- Max: 150kBytes.

However, if the file size limit can only be met at the cost of unnaceptable loss of image quality, this requirement doesn't apply.

Photographic aspects

Uploaded photos should be technically good, especially free of the following defects:

- strong overexposure/underexposure

- low contrast in the subject.

- focussing errors (crisp background, blurred subject)

- strong compression artefacts

- artefacts due to excessive sharpening, or median filtering.

- excessive noise/grain

- Scanning artefacts

- incorrect white balance setting.

Backgrounds

Recommended:

- neutral (grayscale), featureless backgroud, maybe with a slight gradient.

Not recommended:

- strongly colored, complementary backgrounds (they distort color perception of the sample)

- textured backgrounds (textiles, wood, marble, granite, styrofoam, velvet, antistatic foam, etc...)

Caution: Inserting backgrounds digitaly is not easy, take a critical look at the result, the manipulation shouldn't be obvious.

Unsuitable content

-Faceted gems, cabochons, or other decoratively crafted items. (doesn't apply to polished sections, inclusions in gems, etc...)

-Any form of advertising that has not been approved previously by the owner of the site.

Miscellaneous

- Additional text in the image is tolerated, but should be unobtrusive.

- Keep in mind that wide frames cause the image to become very small in the thumbnails.

- SEM and other non-optical images of minerals are welcome

Arbitrary approval clause

In certain cases photos may be approved if they break one or more rule but are worthy of being kept for other reasons, and in other cases photos may be removed even if they adhere exactly to the rules if it is felt that for any other reason they are not suitable for mindat

There's a description of how to upload the photos in previous threads of the manual board, for instance here:

Thanks for the advice. I'm still learning.
