Sorry if this has been asked before but i recently uploaded a selection of photos, all but 1 have appeared in the main gallery, i know that sometimes there can be a delay in adding them and i usually check where it says view unapproved photos, then i know its still yet to be looked at and approved. But in this case it says there are no unapproved photos but i cannot find the photo in the gallery (the public gallery) its visible in my personal gallery. what does this mean?
This is the photo in question

It means that the photo has not been approved for site-wide display - and it wasn't.
Now it is.

Jason Evans February 06, 2012 09:57PM
Thanks Amir, can I ask why it wasn't approved for site wide display, or does it not give that info, was it because of the photo quality or because there are to many photos of that mineral from that locality or was there doubt over its id? or maybe a simpler reason that nobody had time to approve it, i can appreciate there are so many photos to check everyday and some maybe get priority over the more common minerals.
Anyway, thanks again for fixing it.

I don't know.
It's up to the individual manager to approve or not approve a photo for site-wide display or for personal gallery only.
In this case it might have happened accidentally (approval involves clicking on different buttons etc...).

Ralph Bottrill February 06, 2012 10:55PM
Jason, usually if there is a doubt over its identity or location, or we think the photo could be improved, you will get a message, though it may get unapproved if you don't respond. Mostly they get approved unless we think we already have much better photos and the new ones show nothing different. Unless we hit the wrong button!

Ralph

Thank you both for clarifying that.

Jason,
When a photo is uploaded it goes into a file for the managers to approve and it will stay there till it is approved, deleted or places in the users only gallery. Often what happens is that one of us managers will look at the photo and realize that they just don't know enough about that mineral or locality to make an informed judgment about what should be done with that photo. So we just leave it for another manager that hopefully knows more about that mineral or locality than we do to make a proper disposition of the image and or perhaps send out a complaint email. Sometimes no manager feels confident about making a decision about the image so there it sits till a manager takes it upon himself to do enough research on the image to make a decision. Recently we have started an "experts" list where images of particular minerals or from particular localities are automatically referred to a species or locality expert for disposition. Even then there can be delays. I signed up to be an expert on specimens from India, Brazil, Chile, Peru etc. but find that there is a lot of stuff from those places that I need to research because there are a lot of specimens from those places that I don't know about and that I need the help of others that know more about specimens from those localities than I. But then a little thing like the Tucson show gets in the way and that subtracts about a month of my time away from working on Mindat, so that may mean that those images may sit for a month till I can get back to them and do the needful. Similar situations may apply with other managers and the poor image may get stuck for a month or more in the pending file. I don't know what exactly we can do to improve the situation. Perhaps if we cut the salaries of the managers in half they will get the message and work harder on mindat.

Thanks Rock, its been explained to me know, I already knew that it could take time for a manager to approve a photo but what i was confused about was that one of my photos appeared to have been approved but i could not see it in the gallery, its been sorted now though but thanks for taking the time to explain about the work the managers do, and would like to take this opportunity to thanks all the Mindat managers for the work they do in helping to keep Mindat the great place it is today.

Along the same lines, I uploaded 2 photos of twinned strontianite from the Salona quarry, in Clinton County, Pennsylvania. There are no photos of strontianite from that locality on mindat. Will my photos automatically appear on the page for that locality, or must I upload them again to appear? When I tried to upload them again, I received a message that the photos "may already exist". Is there a simple way to include them in the locality page? It has been several days since I uploaded them, so I thought they probably would have appeared by now; however, I don't know what's a "normal" waiting time for this sort of thing to happen.

Carl your photo's are now showing in the gallery.

OK. I get it, sort of. That is a good explanation that you posted, Rock, but I don’t think that anything that I have submitted should raise questions as to accuracy or be open to interpretation.

During the past few days I have posted a number of site and mineral photographs for a Nevada calcite location with the thought that I could clarify information about it for the record. I started by adding a sub locality to this existing locality:

Crofoot-Lewis mine (Hycroft mine), Sulfur District, Humboldt Co., Nevada, USA

There was one posted photograph of a mineral specimen (sulfur) from this locality, no site photographs. I added sub locality “Devil’s Corral” and then, when this sub locality appeared on the locality list for ‘calcite, Humboldt Co., Nevada,” I began to add photographs under that (sub) locality heading. I added 4 modern site photographs, then three mineral photographs and then 2 historic site photographs. All of the photos showed up immediately in my User’s Photo Gallery with the proper (new sub locality Devil’s Corral) location indicated. And a short time later the mineral photos showed up under “calcite, Nevada.” But, when you go to that (sub) location on the list for calcite, Humboldt Co., Nevada, none of the pictures are there. The three photos of mineral specimens did show up on the Crofoot-Lewis mine (Hycroft mine)….. locality, but no site photos.

I have number of additional photos to add but wanted to find out why things were not showing up on the “New Photos Today,” (there have been no queries about photos submitted) and why only mineral photos, no site photos, were showing up under the other location headings. And, why all of the photos do not show up when searching the correct (sub) location that is now posted.

Note that there have been for some time several photos posted to a location called “Devil’s Corral, Black Rock Desert area, Humboldt Co., Nevada, USA” of specimens that are from the Devil’s Corral, Crofoot-Lewis mine (Hycroft mine) location. They were collected and distributed by someone I took to the location some years ago. If you search “calcite, Devil’s Corral,” you will come up with two locations. My recently added sub locality with no photos and the old “Black Rock Desert” locality that shows 5 mineral photos. Those photos should be moved to the new (sub) locality and the old Black Rock Desert location deleted.

Cheers!

Steve

Hey Stephen - after you've uploaded your photos, go back to the locality page - under the "edit" tab, select "clear cache" - and voila! The photos will be there.

Astounding calcite specimens, btw!

Sounds great, except that I don't see a "clear cache" option in the Edit pull-down on the locality page. Any other suggestions?
avatar
David Von Bargen March 09, 2013 03:34PM
Clearing the caches is available to "full" members. The numbers will just be off, but none of the photo galleries are cached. There are reasons why a photo may not be available on locality or mineral pages such as too vague a location, out of focus photos, bad backgrounds, etc.
avatar
Ed Clopton March 31, 2013 02:23PM
I read your explanation about "full members" right away when you posted it, but have been wondering ever since how one becomes a "full member" of Mindat with cache-clearing privileges. I have a user name, password, 30 photos approved and displayed, and another dozen (some submitted well before or along with others that now appear) awaiting processing. And is there any way to tell whether a photo has been relegated to the user's own gallery vs. approved for public display? Maybe that has happened to some of mine that I've been waiting to see accessible from locality pages.

Jason Evans March 31, 2013 05:55PM
I would still like to know what happened to my Iris quartz photos, have had no messages saying they have not been approved and they are not listed when i click on view my unapproved photos yet they are not in the public gallery so i can only assume they are only approved for my own gallery, but why? There is nothing wrong with the photos and its not as if there are to many photos of Iris quartz, only 6 that I can see.

David Von Bargen March 31, 2013 07:25PM
"And is there any way to tell whether a photo has been relegated to the user's own gallery vs. approved for public display? " If it is not on your "All my unapproved photos" gallery and is not visible in the location or mineral page photo galleries, it will be a "user's own gallery only" photo.

"but have been wondering ever since how one becomes a "full member" of Mindat with cache-clearing privileges." It is when the managers feel that you have a good working knowledge of how data entry for mindat works and your entries no longer require double checking.

E.L.
From the personal information you list on you home page you could very well soon become a level two person here on mindat or possibly a manager. I thought the pictures you post of stuff from various Illinois and Iowa quarries were quite interesting and your work on the 25 year index of the Mineralogical Record indicates that you must know your stuff. I have used that index a fair amount, especially in regard to creating stubs of A minerals for the Best Minerals project here on Mindat. Do you know if there is any movement to creating an online index for the Min Record for all years?

One of the things that the management here on mindat has increasingly come to value if people can get along with others and can with good humor over look and work with the minor idiosyncrasies of others. I as a manager have often felt that I am, or at least have been right on the border, of what the other managers can tolerate. If nothing else I hope I have learned to be a little more tolerant of others. I suspect that this is the kind of thing that comes naturally to politicians. The key to being accepted here as a level two person or a manager is that a person besides the above, is in inclination to do work here on mindat beyond uploading a few images and participating on the message board. Participating in the message board is important because it allows the managers to see how you interact with other's especially newbes who don't know much. You get points for being nice to them and trying your best to help them and not make them feel foolish. The other thing that managers worry about is that you know your way around the site and when you enter or correct localities and or images you do it correctly and don't make many errors, in other words you don't screw things up. If for instance you thought you could work on cleaning up localities in Illinois and or Iowa (they may or may not require a lot of work) this is something that would be appreciated. If you decided to to this kind of work you should first give us some idea of what needs to be done and then coordinate your work with Chet Lemanski who is our locality guru. Also you might like to do a few Best Minerals articles. This is the subsection of Mindat that is given over to my care and the other moderators of this part of the message board. You complete a couple of those and Ill make you a moderator and you can create your own articles there from scratch.

Is there any particular part of mindat that you think you would like to work on? How would you like to see mindat change? What shortcomings do you find here on mindat?

Hello, Can any of the managers please tell me where my iris quartz photo is? it was uploaded on the 12th of February and I have had no message to say it has not been approved but it is not visible in the public gallery, does this mean that it is only in my own private gallery? I added a close up photo of one of the crystals, showing a nice rainbow effect with stripes of colour, that was added to the public gallery very quickly, so i am happy to have at least one iris quartz photo in the gallery but would like the other photo to be seen as well, it shows the entire specimen and it wasn't easy to get a photo that showed the coloured flashes. I am sorry to pester about this, I blame Alfredo Petrov, since i read his article on iris quartz I am obsessed with the stuff and that is why i am so keen to see my iris quartz photo in the gallery!

Jason,
Can you tell me where your quartz was from and what it looked like? There are a lot of quartz specimens pictured here on mindat.

Hi Rock, It is Iris quartz from Burhanpur district, Madhya Pradesh, India.
Here is the photo-
http://www.mindat.org/photo-515568.html
As you can see it has been uploaded and is visible in my gallery but not when I look on the public gallery.

Jason Evans April 22, 2013 09:39AM
I'm wondering if it has been added to the main quartz page rather than the Iris quartz page, I am checking now, I just did a locality search and clicked on show photos and the picture does appear there.

Jason Evans April 22, 2013 09:49AM
Still cant find it even after searching all through the quartz pages until I got to Burhanpur district.

Jason, keep in mind that some of your photos were uploaded as "child photos", which means they don't become visible until you click on the "parent" photo.
Cheers,
Alfredo
avatar
Jason Evans April 22, 2013 05:19PM
Thanks Alfredo, the problem is fixed now, but can you elaborate on what you said as it has confused me a little, I uploaded the "parent" on the 12th of february and I beleive i added the child photos at the same time, I added a further child photo i think yesterday, in an attempt that it might bring it to someone's attention so it would finally be added! The photo has always been visible in my private gallery but not in the public gallery, until now. I dont get how that can be anything to do with having to click the parent photo to make it visible in the public gallery.
As said, its fixed now so I am happy!
avatar
Alfredo Petrov April 22, 2013 06:38PM
I'm not sure, Jason. I might have misunderstood the problem, and seen it only after Debbie had already fixed it. Try uploading more photos and see whether the same thing happens again. (I only know a little about rocks, not computers - Their habits confuse me completely sad smiley )

Debbie Woolf April 22, 2013 08:34PM
Jason, just to clarify uploading another photo (child) will not get the first photo placed site wide - If you feel a photo should be site wide but it's in your user only gallery then just come back & ask why, there may be a valid reason or may not.

Please note, you should always provide a link about the questioned photo in your initial enquiry.

Thanks
Debbie
