Samples for XPS (ESCA)... how much?

Hi all,
I have been suggested to run an XPS / ESCA analysis on a new mineral to have an independent evaluation of oxidation states of elements inside.
Of course... material is very scarce and before sacrificing more crystals it would be great if I could use a grain I already probed for preliminary SEM-EDS work. It is a 30 um crystal mounted on graphite gel and coated with evaporated graphite.
Is there anyone familiar with this technique? Could crystal size and coating be an issue for analysis?

Do you know the crystal structure? If yes, bond-valence calculations might be sufficient.
