Hi all... There is an issue with this location. There are TWO Southern Cross Mines in the Broken Hill district. The first is this location, which is a Broken Hill style deposit approximately 15 km north of Broken Hill, on Nine Mile Station. It contains the standard - quartz gahnite horizon, green feldspar, garnet sandstone combination - similar to other Broken Hill style lead / zinc lodes in the district. At the base of the hill below the main mine, is a small copper show with micro crystals of azurite. There is no calcite present at this mine.
The second location is actually a sub-locality of the Zinc/NBHC mine on the main line of lode at Broken Hill. The most southernly shaft along the line of lode is the "Southern Cross Shaft". This is where the famous hexagonal tabular calcite crystals came from. It is also the zone where the best Broken Hill prehnite crystals came from. I'll enter this into mindat as a new sub-location, however there is something that I cannot do.
There are two photos of calcite here on mindat from this location that need to be associated with Zinc/NBHC mine - Southern Cross Shaft area, not Southern Cross Mine.
