I had the message that this specimen may have been mis-ID'd so I changed the name from Fergusonite to Fergusonite-Y. Hopefully this rectifies the situation. Not sure how an average collector like me could know that this piece had to have the suffix since I collected it in the 1970's when it was simply known as Fergusonite.

And I'd like to ask why my latest photos weren't in the new photos of the day category. I posted a few pictures of some very significant Sperrylites as well as this and they never made the list. I have a number of other specimens that are also world's best or world-class, but how can I get others to appreciate them if they don't make the list? There must be something I'm missing. Photos of road construction make the list but a rare beyond rare Sperrylite doesn't even merit a mention? Feeling highly discouraged here. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction?

Your sperrylites were all approved for everyone to see.
You may have overlooked the message at the bottom of [www.mindat.org].

Hi Peter. I wasn't aware that you had received a complaint about Fergusonite. Not even fergusonite, let alone Fergusonite-Y, is listed for the locality. Perhaps someone more familiar with the locality might comment. So when approving the photo I sent you the following;

" Your photo might not be the minerals you said it is"
"That's a killer fergusonite, but how do you know it is Y dominant? It looks
like β-Fergusonite. Thanks for posting it."

I also approved your rich sperrylite. I'll bump it up from where Uwe told you to look.

I wonder if the locality hasn't been mixed up with this: [www.mindat.org]

Thanks so much Reiner. Since Peter collected this himself he may remember the locality.

I notice that only the J G Gole quarry locates both Fergusonite-(Ce) and Fergusonite-(Y) there and I wonder why all the posted photos are labelled Fergusonite-(Y)? Have they all been analysed? Are only the big ones Y ?

The Pegmatite is Y rich that is why they only find Allanite-Y there. I also analyzed some Euxenite from there and detected no Ce one would think that if there was Fergusonite-Ce one would find some Ce in the Euxenite which is found with the Fergusonite. The Fergusonites in the ROM collection are all Fergusonite-Y so I don't know who put Fergusonite-Ce as being found there but there is no evidence for it.

The Fergusonite from the Card Quarry is also Y dominant. I have added the results of a 1977 chemical analysis to the posted photograph.

In answer to my recollection of where I got this, I have to admit that I'm not sure. And I didn't think it was Faraday Mine either. This Fergusonite came from somewhere further north. I recall it being a long ride past Bancroft. J G Gole doesn't ring a bell, but Madawaska seems vaguely familiar.

However, of all the photos of Fergusonite on Mindat, only those labelled as Faraday Mine seemed most similar to my specimen. So that's how I tagged it. In my defense, my amateur zeal got the best of me. I apologize if it's caused difficulties and I shall refrain from posting photos unless I am certain of their location.

Edit: Thinking on this more, I'm not sure I collected this. I may have been thinking of a corundum location because I just can't recall any field trips I was on where I went looking for Fergusonite. (unless we were looking for another mineral and the Fergusonite was secondary. I noticed that Euxenite is found at J G Gole and I DO remember being on a trip looking for Euxenite).

It's also possible that it may have been given to me by another collector.

Thanks Reiner, I fixed the locality.

Thanks Richard. I'm glad you were watching.

On the contrary Peter at least I learned something and a locality got a little cleaner. If you are in doubt about a locality, you can post a photo on the "identity" board and receive the combined wisdom of the community.winking smiley
