PhotosLeogangite - Magnesite mine, Inschlag Alp, Schwarzleograben, Hütten, Leogang, Saalfelden, Salzburg, Austria

I am no expert on this place anymore (wasn`t there for over 30 years) but does this relly look like leogangite? Just curious what others think.

I've sent a request for input from the dealer that sold me the specimen. Perhaps he can shed some light.

Hello Christian,

That is not a fair question. If you think it is not leogangite then explain why you think it is not.

That`s correct Reiner. I wanted to write more about it but unfortunately I got a visit in my bureau and had no time to continue.

I know the Vogelhalt mine quite well (very near the described locality) and from there came leogangite in abundance http://www.mindat.org/gallery.php?loc=51428&min=26518.

I`ve never seen it from the magnesite mine so far although its the TL so I`m just interested and want to know more. Maggie, do the xtls look similiar to those on the link? Thank you very much.

Hello Christian,

You are right to question the locality as Maggie made an assumption that is not valid. The label with the sample only said it was from the type locality Schwartzleograben. When Maggie uploaded the photo she incorrectly picked the Magnesite Mine and should have only attributed it to Schwartzleograben. However it is more likely that it is Vogelhalt mine ( and thus not the type locality) as the sample was recently acquired, but we do not know for sure where in the area it came from. Maggie is working on changing the attribute and trying to determine if it is indeed from one of the type localities. Thank you for raising the question.

Leogangite is probably right, but the locality is not the magnesite mine (what did the label say?).

There are several localities in the Schwarzleograben where the mineral was found.

Hi again

We have no dealer label, but the online listing identified the specimen as coming from the type locality. When I uploaded the photo, I picked the magnesite mine since it is the type locality. Obviously, upon closer inspection of the database, that selection was made in haste, for it is a co-type locality. I goofed! Thanks for catching my error!

I have changed the database to show the locality as Schwarzleograben.

Thanks again,

Maggie

...just heard from the dealer... the locality is indeed Vogelhalt!

Again, thanks to everyone!
