Actinolite from Czechoslovakia, locality? August 18, 2012 01:42PM |

Hello all,
attached is a picture of a specimen of Actinolite (approximately 12cm x 4.0cm) from 'Czechoslovakia' (the label possibly predates the 1993 split into Czech Republic and Slovakia).
Does anyone have any ideas where this might have come from?
Thanks,
Vik

Hi Vik,
Beautiful specimen. I don't know of a location within Czech Republic where this can be found (perhaps some local experts from there do) but it reminds me greatly of specimens I have from various places within Tyrol. In my opinion, Zillertal and Gschlösstal material compares nicely to your specimen of what looks like Actinolite in a talc schist. All the best.

Thank you Ronald, I will look into the localities you mentioned.
The white matrix can be scratched with a fingernail, so you might be correct in assuming it is talc schist.
Martin, I can only tell you that it used to belong to a friend of mine who is (mainly) a tattoo artist.
He also makes cabs and jewelry from minerals though.
Pictures of his work can be viewed here: [www.tattoopink.be] (under Pink Art).
He has been collecting display specimens as well, but I'm helping him to 'get rid of the clutter' since he wants to make room for other specimens.
His manner of labeling consists of writing the name and (if known) locality on a piece of white sticky tape and taping it to the bottom of the specimen. I don't know if there was ever an 'original' label though...
