Identity HelpVanadinite from where?

Hi all,

I bought this specimen from a local curosia shop. It was labeled as tourmaline but obviously it is a vanadinite from Morocco. It is about 20 x 15 centimeters, with nice, often multicoloured prismatic crystals (almost black in the middle with red terminations). Matrix is a layer of quartz crystals covered with a black, somewhat powdery mineral. Would it be safe to say this is from Taouz? And what is the black mineral?

cheers, Mark

Hi Mark,

the black matrix is most likely Goethite, and I think it's either from either Taouz or from Mibladen.

Kind regards,

Vik

I would agree with Taouz. I have a similar specimen, with the same black coating which colors the fingers black upon touching. It was described by the (reputable) dealer as manganese/iron oxides.
