Nomenclature proposals approved in November 2011

IMA 11-C: The proposal to redefine matulaite
has been approved. The ideal formula of
matulaite becomes Fe3+Al7(PO4)4(PO3OH)2(OH)8(H2O)8·8H2O.
Specimens NHMLAC 28324 are designated as the
neotypes for the species, and are deposited in
collections of the Natural History Museum of
Los Angeles County, Los Angeles, USA.

IMA 11-E: The proposal to redefine vanadiumdravite
has been approved. Vanadium-dravite is
renamed oxy-vanadium-dravite, since the
mineral belongs to the alkali group, oxysubgroup
3 of the tourmaline supergroup
nomenclature. The ideal formula of the
mineral becomes NaV3(V4Mg2)Si6O18(BO3)3(OH)3O.

IMA 11-F: The proposal to modify the
nomenclature of the hollandite supergroup has
been approved. Hollandite is redefined as the
Ba2+-Mn3+ endmember of the coronadite group,
with an ideal formula Ba(Mn4+6Mn3+2)O16, and
the name ferrihollandite is introduced to
designate the Ba2+-Fe3+ endmember of this
group , with an ideal formula
Ba(Mn4+6Fe3+2)O16. The mineral ankangite is
discredited, since it corresponds to mannardite.
Moreover, the ideal endmember formulae of six
potentially new species in the hollandite supergroup
are defined.

Nomenclature proposals approved in April 2012

AMPHIBOLE SUPERGROUP: A new
nomenclature scheme for the amphibole supergroup
was approved by CNMNC on the 3rd of April 2012.

GARNET SUPERGROUP: A new nomenclature
scheme for the garnet supergroup was
approved by the CNMNC on the 3rd of April,
2012. The garnet supergroup includes at present
32 valid species, for which endmember
formulae are given. There are 4 potential new
mineral species which need further study in
order to be approved. Some changes among
existing mineral names were also approved.

Marco,

Are there any papers or other documents available on the amphibole supergroup?

Is the formula for IMA No. 2012-015 Schlüterite-(Y) Cu4ClF(OH)6 Stetind pegmatite correct? There is no Yttrium in the formula????

No, at this moment. Any paper.

Surely it is a mistake on the IMA list. Stuart can help us to solve the problem.

I have now the reply from Marco Pasero. The correct formula is: (Y,REE)2AlSi2O7(OH)2F.

Fuxiaotuite appears to be the same as "clinotyrolite" which was published without approval and later considered as invalid. Also note that the TLs given for Fuxiaotuite are the same as those previously specified for clinotyrolite.

Luanshiweiite: The TL is GUANpo (官坡; 官 = Guan in the official transliteration), not GUANGpo. The "n-ng-dyslectics" are still a big problem with Chinese locality names and cause a lot of confusion.

And tellurocanfieldite (which is not sulfur-free) is possibly be the same as the "tellurian canfieldite with a particularly high tellurium content" that has been previously reported from several localities including Bajiazi.

Is here any public details on Browneite yet? Would like to do a write up on Pat Browne who I believe that it was named after

little reading, thinking and hammering."

Not yet, Rod. Any public detail.

For Lahnsteinite, Zn4(SO4)(OH)6·3H2O,
there are two other confirmed localities. One will be published in a collector's journal, along with good photos.

Talking of new minerals and teh like, does anybody know when the next edition of Fleischer's Glossary will be published? The last one was 2008 and normally they come out every four years but I haven't seen or heard anything about the next edition being published. Does anybody know?

It is the same mineral as "clinotyrolite" but as all tyrolite is monoclinic and this mineral is definitely not tyrolite the name change was approved in the IMA accepted proposal.

Yes. I think it is a little mistake in the IMA CNMNC paper.

This makes no sense. Should clinoenstatite be called something new because all enstatite is orthorhombic?

Tellurocanfieldite is here given as a member of the Argyrodite-Canfieldite series. I've no objection to this, as I've long thought "series" could have multiple end-members, but usually I get overruled by those who insist a series can have only 2 end-members
