Mineralogical ClassificationRobinsonite or a new robinsonite-like mineral ?

12th Feb 2014 10:52 UTCPeter Haas

Scientists found a rather unique Pb-Zn-Sb deposit in eastern Tibet: main ore minerals are sphalerite and robinsonite (!); there's also plenty of orpiment, while galena is totally absent.

Problem with the robinsonite is that the composition does not match the reported formula well; EPMA results correspond to Pb17As2Sb27S54 instead - all samples contain minor arsenic (but no iron or zinc). The authors of the paper performed a chemical composition search on mindat (there's a reference to mindat in the paper !) and didn't get a match, but identified the mineral as robinsonite anyway.

Yao Tan, Xianwu Bi, Zhonglei Xin, Feilin Zhu, Minyang Liao, and Yubang Li (2011): Geology, geochemistry and origin of Lanuoma Pb-Zn-Sb deposit in Changdu area, Tibet. Mineral Deposits 30(4), 599-615 (in Chinese with English abstract).
