Mineralogical ClassificationIMA 2006-010 = fluorcalciobritholite

12th Oct 2006 21:12 UTCMarco E. Ciriotti Manager

From Excalibur catalogue:

FLUORCALCIOBRITHOLITE- Mt. Kukisvumchorr, Khibiny, Kola, Russia

Yet another NEW SPECIES from this prolific area, collected in 1977 from the head of the Tuliok River on the eastern slopw of Mt. Kukisvumchorr, with NO MATERIAL found since! Just recently approved (IMA # 2006-010), we have what is essentially the entire world supply of the mineral! Formula: (Ca,REE)5<(Si,P)O4>3F, hexagonal, a member of the britholite group (or perhaps britholite subgroup of the apatite group?), an analogue of britholite-(Ce) (also can be considered an analogue of fluorapatite!) occuring as minute, somewhat transparent pinkish-brown isolated and elongated crystals and grains in masses of white sodalite-nepheline-orthoclase aggregates. (omissis).

A similar phase (with others) is in:

• Oberti, R., Ottolini, L., Della Ventura, G., Parodi, G.C. (2001): On the symmetry and crystal chemistry of britholite: New structural and microanalytical data. American Mineralogist, 86, 1066-1075.

Hi Marco,

do you have a pdf copy of the last article (Oberti et al,), that you could mail me?

Would be of great interest since we have a lot britholites up here...

Best regards

Peter

Yes Peter, I'll pass it to you.

Ciao. Marco

A poster of Prof. Marco Pasero presented to the SIMP Congress 2006 concerning fluorcalciobritholite:

Thank you Marco!

I see that he use "hydroxylbritholite-(REE)" instead of "britholite-(REE). Is there a renaming going on? Can't tell from the text, me and Italian language...

Regards

Peter

Hi Peter,

I am not sure if exists a formal proposal to CNMNC for the renamings of the britholite series, but surely the Pasero suggestion is a good idea. .

Ciao.

Marco

According to the poster, the minerals approved by the IMA are written in boldface. It's possible it was an editing error, and 'hydroxylbritholite-(REE)' should not have been bolded.

OK Jim, the name "hydroxylbritholite-(REE)" is written in boldface. So I think that the new name was approved even if it is not so clearly indicated in the poster.
