I think the red nodules are oolitic Bauxite. Not sure if black is Obsidian or Coal. If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

Coal is a lot softer and lighter than obsidian, very much. Does the piece feel as heavy as a typical rock that size, or much lighter? Can you scratch it w/ a knife, or glass? it looks sawn. Do you know w/ what blade? It is a cool looking piece, where is it from?

Just a guess, I have a specimen of Cristobalite in Obsidian from Yellowstone NP which looks quite like it...

Edit: Yellowstone, not Yosemite...

Thanks for your comments. I finally found a picture of this rock in an old book. It is Orbicular Ocean Jasper from Sausalito, Ca. Found by Mr. Kinrade in the 60's.

Cbates,

Looks like some killer material for some lap work.

Vik,

If you have a specimen from Yosemite National Park, it was obtained illegally...LOL. That is, if it was after the national park system was inaugurated. The last time I heard, it was illegal to harvest anything from a U.S. national park, reservation, sanctuary, etc. I was sorely tempted when I visited the Petrified Forest many years ago.

Vik is most likely confused about the locality. California cristobalite in obsidian is unlikely to be from Yosemite; more likely Coso Hot Springs in Inyo county or Cougar Butte in Siskiyou county.

Makes me wonder about all the other specimens from 'national parks' here on Mindat, and whether they were obtained legally or not smiling smiley

The picture I just took of my specimen is not perfect, but good enough to get a location I think. Yellowstone or not?
