Some Fall Color

Some Fall Color

Every year, our Japanese Red Maple turns a beautiful shade of orange. Right in time for Halloween in fact. So I thought you all might like to see a picture of it. We believe the tree is about fifty years old.

Beautiful picture and tree David. The Japanese Maple tree, with its red laceleaf foliage, has always been a favorite of mine since my days working a landscape job many years ago. Yours looks to be a nice size and density, and the orange color is very nice, not something I have seen before (just the usual green to red transformation). These are definitely a tree of delayed gratification, as the time it takes them to grow to a decent size can take decades, as you have noted.

Thanks for sharing.

David,

Like Scott I have always admired the Japanese Maple, especially the cut leaf variety with its green summer foliage and brilliant fall color.

Attached is a photo of three youngsters behind our home which will eventually grow into montrous October Glory Maples.

Best,

Joe

David,

Here is a picture of your tree's little brother on display at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania. Beautiful bonsai.

Best,

Joe

Thanks Scott and Joe.

Joe, I love Longwood Gardens. My wife and I spent hours there walking about on a scorcher of a day and cooled off with some great local beer at the restaurant-the one where you can eat on the deck under the trees.

We moved into our home sixteen years ago and our poor Maple had been neglected by the owners. They never pruned it. So my Dad and I spent a fair amount of time clipping out all the small dead twigs which was preventing air from circulating inside and then we had the larger dead limbs sterile pruned by a pro. We hope it lives a good long time.

In most of Florida, you can't grow Japanese maples at all, much less get any fall color on them. In fact, our most common maple (red maple) doesn't reliably turn. In South and Central Florida, sometimes the only species that does turn a nice color is a vine.... "Look at that beautiful red color! I love fall!" "Just don't touch it. It's poison ivy."

My Poison Oak is looking very colourful as well!
Thanks for the great fall foliage shots, I miss that part of living in New England.

for whatever reasons, we are getting nice colour in our maples and other trees this year...perhaps the nights are colder soon enough
to allow the leaves to cut off their sap and cause this change in colour...usually the diurnal range in the fall temps isn't wide enough to cause much more than a yellowing...that and the recent full moon has been a great visual pleasure trip from day to night.

I wish we had more trees that changed colors here. Occasionally you see a few but for the most part most of the trees are evergreens.
