The Best from Down Under

I have seen some nice blocky barites from the Flinders Ranges, but this one seemed unusual, more like some Chinese ones. I would be interested in some more photos. That goes for South Australian minerals on Mindat in general. I will upload the Mutooroo malachite -surprised there are no others here!'
Re Oraparinna, it is listed as both that name and Oraparinna homestead, I guess they should be merged?

Regards,
Ralph

The Oraparinna barite mine is 15 km from the Oraparinna Homestead and there are other mineral occurrences in the district so i wouldn't merge these. In checking i found that Linke's Lode is an old name for the Dunbar barite mine, which is also listed in Mindat, and is 15 km to the SW of the Oraparinna mine, which places it closer to the homestead and clearly a separate deposit. I will need to update my label.

I see that the South Australian Mines Department lists 160 occurrences of baryte in the state!

Something a litttle unusual from Mt Bischoff.

Ice clear Sellaite on ferro-magnesite. Specimen around 90mm wide. Self collected too but not by me, Luke found this one after I got a few others earlier from a seam in the ore body.

Sellaite is found in a number of habits in the mine, this one is clusters on horizontally staked crystals in small groups, It was difficult to find mineral for a long time but appears to be quite common once we found what to look for in different areas of the deposit.

"Self collected too but not by me"

Can't you say that about every mineral specimen you didn't find? :)

Jolyon,

Very funny, I hadn't though of it that way, but you are quite right. Need to work on my language skills ;)

I guess i had better rephrase - I wish I had self collected it, it would have cost me less to add to my collection than buying from my son.

Hi,

I don't have many specimens in my collection from Australia but here is one of my favorites:

Azurite, 3.5cm by 5cm from the Burra Mine, South Australia, Australia. I got this from Pam and Bob Stewart at the Nassau County, New York mineral show in 1978.

Here's one of the first Aquamarine's that I collected from Torrington many years ago, measuring 4cm tall, still one of my prized finds.

I've been playing around with my Canon DSLR, extension tubes and closeup rings. This is one of the results. A sceptre calcite from Flinders, Victoria. The sceptre measures 0.8mm across. I call this "the lighthouse".

I don't know Phil. It was acquired by Joan Lamond from Barry Porter at the 1995 Horsham Gemkhana.

Steve,

Since the shift is to things "minute" here is a tiny portion of a granite thumbnail specimen containing a micro-vug filled with ulrichite from Lake Boga. FOV is about 3-4mm, using a 36mm extension tube on a 60mm macro, f4.5. I am now learning the limitations of this setup for capturing such weeee things. But at the end of the exercise, it is fun to capture your little specimenson one's computer, no matter how good or bad.

Nice on David. Important to note that minerals such as ulrichite can't be shown any other way. They only occur as micros.

Here is one of my favorites T/N's from "Down Under". A psuedo-cubic scepter from the Entia Valley, NWT and measures 23.9 x 13.4 x 13.3 mm.

Here's a couple more 2011 finds from Harts Range, a couple of small but well-formed chrysoberyls, and a nice translucent Beryl from western Harts Range.
