Thanks Joe, Yes They will remain in Canada. The first two are on display at the ROM in Toronto and were purchased with Heritage money to remain in Canada. The third would have to go through the Heritage act to leave the country. Since St Hilaire is well represented in our museums with even better pieces, this one could get an exit permit, but I'm thinking of taking it to my grave! Sadly this one is gone:

I haven't been able to take photos for a while, but figured I'd pull a favorite Canadian piece out of my gallery.

Earlier in the thread there was an attractive baryte from Niobec, Quebec, posted. Here's a big, ugly sibling: a nearly 24cm-long, chisel-tip crystal of brownish-grey baryte, dusted with small pyrites. The baryte is complete all around but shows some damage on the termination.

Weighs about six pounds and thus likely will never get a rotation through on my glass-shelved display case.

Cheers, eh!

Another interesting Canadian specimen. This serpentine is from the Baie Verte Peninsula on Newfoundland. The specimen is approx. 3.5 cm across and is unique in that the dark coloured host rock is a serpentinised ultramafic rock (likely a peridotite) which is believed to be derived from the mantle. Mantle rocks are quite rare on earth's surface so to see an entire outcrop of it is truely an experience for a geologist.

Awesome specimens one and all!

I am ashamed that I haven't taken the time to photograph more of my Canadian pieces. It was to be my project this winter if I ever get my lighting issues resolved. In the meantime I have to rely on pics I took in the summer that I haven't yet posted, which are limited. I have just uploaded this one to the gallery, and in addition I am now the proud sponsor of Baffin Island. Since the photos likely won't show in the gallery yet until approved, I have posted them here.

Manitobaite? Minerals from Saskatchewan? Don's Barite (you must read the caption on his gallery link - made me giggle) Bradley's Zircon, minerals that got away, and ones that ALMOST got away... Canadian material, named for a Canadian and collected by a Canuck... east coast, west coast and everywhere in betwixt... and eye-popping photos, too, by the way!

Not only have I been introduced to new minerals and localities, I'm delighted to see the response from new-ish members. Thanks folks!

Hi Maggie:

I tried another of Bobfergusonite (a Manitoba mineral named after Dr. Ferguson of U.of M and associated with Maniobaite) but the restrictions on file size won't let me. However it is posted on the # 22 Dyke webpage.

Hi Maggie

Yes that one. I am still new enough at this that there are things I have not figured out yet. The schiller on the Bobfergusonite is quite distinctive and you could see it in outcrop.

Michael, thanks for the kind words. We think alike, my next post was going to be a small Rabbit Lake Dolomite, but your piece is magnificent and glad you beat me to it!

regards,
stephanie :)

[disguising voice to sound like Rock Currier] - Hi Brad, if you don't mind, please upload your specimens to the galleries - they are very worthy candidates for the site!

Hi,

Beautiful specimens.

I acquired this specimen at the Springfield, MA show in 2004 from Scholten's Minerals. It has a short story behind it. I had canvassed the show for three days and was taking a final look on Sunday when I saw this specimen in the dealer's case. I had not noticed it before and was told a collector had asked that it be put aside and then changed his mind about the purchase. So that collector's loss was my gain and proves that effort often pays off in our hobby. The specimen is a hessonite from the Jeffrey Mine, Asbestos, Canada and is 3cm by 4cm in size

Keep 'em coming, please.
