Even the image in my posting is scaled down from the original uploaded to Mindat.
You have to click on the image to see the full size version.
What's really nice are the high resolution images like this one.
Calcite From The Rist Mine
Only works well on a large monitor.

Double-stemmed amethyst-sceptered smoky quartz from the Boulder Batholith, Jefferson Co., Montana, USA. Collected this May, it's my favorite today, because it's leaving my custody after finally splitting up the find with my collecting partner.
Because the Boulder Batholith has enjoyed long periods of deformation (as the structural geologists say), it originally came out of the pocket in 2 major and 5 minor pieces. Fortunately, we were able to piece it back together. Approximately 10x12 cm.
Best regards,
Jonathan

My favourite of the day, well its been my favourite since i got it a few days ago, is my Iris quartz, I am entranced by the beautiful flashes of rainbow colours and the fact that it is natural makes it awesome. It is s a shame that it is mostly new age stores that sell this as anandalite, I suspect a lot of mineral collectors stay clear of those kinds of stores so a lot of people may not have even heard of Iris quartz, or might think its just another angel aurora type quartz. The colours were hard to show on the photo of the entire specimen so i took some close ups of the crystals.
It is from India but the exact location is unknown, the seller said it was from Maharashtra, but when i uploaded it, it said the location was not listed in the database, so I instead labelled it as being from Madhya Pradesh as that seems to be the only accepted locality for it.
Hardly an hour goes by before i get the urge to pick it up and move it around under the light so i can see those rainbow flashes!

Jason - I have about half a dozen of these quartz from different sources and all list Aurangabad as the location, so I was wondering if there was more than one location too. I was thinking of sending queries to the dealers to see if they know more, but it may be one of those situations where the true location is being mistold to safeguard the find.
My favourite today is this specimen from the Thomas Range, a location that provides many interesting minerals and assemblages.
From Jeremy Fuller.
Durangite on Hematite
Thomas Range, Juab Co., Utah, USA
approx 25 x 15mm
crystals to approx 3mm

Rock,
I'm not ignoring your request, just haven't had time to do it justice. I'll try to reply this evening on the Best Minerals Quartz article discussion thread.
Best regards,
Jonathan

Nice piece Michael. I aspire to get one of those some day...
Steph, wow that looks kind of like my vanadinite... but *cough* shouldn't you be posting that beauty somewhere else?
Jason, I like those irridescences--reminds me of the piece below--although yours has far more spectral range...

A giant M'fouti Wulfenite crystal, belonging to the Musée Royal d'Afrique Centrale, Tervuren, Belgium! Currently not on display, that speciment impressed me when I was a kid, easy to understand why! My hand for the scale...
Enjoy

Hi Tony,
I am glad that you got one of our famous Topaz from Argentina!
This piece was the only good one on matrix. In general, came out only about 25 pieces!
The location can now be considered "mined out". One of our group was there again and nothing more has been found!
Regards,
Robert Brandstetter

Amazing wulfenite, Valere! Nice malachite formations on your Morenci specimen, Michael.
My favorite today - another Montana piece collected this May. Calcite from Gallatin County. 15.5 x 10 cm.
Best regards,
Jonathan
