In a post on Gail's Favorites I mentioned that I'd love to know the whereabouts of a specimen I sold in 1981. Steve suggested I start a thread. Anyone else have photos of old specimens they'd like to see again? Should probably mention that no commercial purpose is intended. In the case of this Denny piece, it was lovely to hold in the hand, and my old photo does not do it justice. Would love to see a better photo of an old friend.

Bob,
I got to thinking about this when Bob Harman posted a picture of an aragonite that I collected and traded back in the 1960's and never forgot. Like you, the photos I have are not always the best and it would be great to see an updated picture.
This kyanite is one that I hand carried back from Brazil in 1988 and chipped out of the enclosing quartz. One of the best that I ever saw and one that went to a California collector that year.
Cheers,
Steve

This is the specimen, also pictured elsewhere in the "Midwest USA Geode" thread, that Stephen Rose talks about. He collected it in the 1960s at the Monroe County, Indiana aragonite site on Route 37 north of Bloomington, Indiana. He and a co-author wrote an article about the site for "Rocks and Minerals" periodical Nov-Dec 1966 - Jan-Feb 1967. Indiana Route 37 was 2 lanes at that time and I was a student at Indiana University. While I had a passing interest in rocks at that time, I didn't actively collect. In the 1970s the road was widened to a 4 lane divided hi-way, just like the Route 37 Harrodsburg road cuts pix in "The Nature Thread". The aragonite site still occasionally produces a nice specimen. About 2008, this specimen turned up at the Bloomington, Indiana rock show (which, by the way, is still going strong and will occur June 21 - 24). I acquired it and it is now in my Indiana geode collection. This pix is from my 2009 Indiana geode display at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis. CHEERS...........BOB

This galena on chert was my first 'big' purchase of a mineral specimen. I paid $30 for it at a shop in Bloomington, Indiana in about 1965. No small amount of money in those days.
It is about 40 cm in length and has a location on the back, a white patch of enamel with india ink lettering with the location; Big John Mine, Treece, Kansas and my specimen number.
I sold it to another dealer at the Denver show in about 1987.
Cheers!
